Genner Beach on Genner Bay

Beach, bay and seasonal swimming

Genner Beach is located on Sønderballevej in Genner Bay. The child-friendly sandy beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and has public toilets. The swimming season is also clearly defined for planning a day at the beach: it runs from 1 June to 15 September. This means that Genner Beach offers not only a beach experience but also a defined timeframe for summer stays.

Kalvø and the nature around Genner Beach

In the immediate vicinity of Genner Beach, Kalvø lies at the end of Genner Bay. The small island covers an area of 17 hectares and is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Kalvø is part of a wildlife reserve; the outer nature and wildlife reserve also extends into the area near Genner Beach at Slibemølle. Those who want to combine coastal landscapes with protected nature will find several clearly distinct landscape features here.

On Kalvø, the loop trail is suitable for wheelchairs and prams and takes about an hour. In addition, an accessible fishing bridge offers a wide-ranging view. These two features also make the immediate surroundings interesting to visitors who, when taking a walk, pay attention to a manageable duration or special orientation options.

Hiking on the Kalvø Trail

In the immediate vicinity of Genner Beach, the Kalvø Trail is a marked route approximately 3 kilometres long that ends on the small, protected island of Kalvø. The trail begins at Genner Hoel and leads through beech forest. Along the way, there are beautiful views of Kalvø and Genner Bay. The route also includes a covered picnic shelter and a basic overnight site. This means that different interests can be identified within a single hiking destination: distance, forest, views of the bay and a simple place to rest stand side by side, without implying any particular travel itinerary.

Maritime culture and nature observation

In the immediate vicinity is the maritime cultural centre Det Maritime Kalvø, located in the former main building of the Kalvø shipyard. The former shipyard site therefore gives the excursion a maritime connection. Genner Beach is also associated with the municipality's Blue Flag programme, which includes nature and environmental education activities for children and adults. On 1 July 2026, activities for observing wildlife and plant life on the beach and in the water are documented at Genner Beach from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Genner Beach is also regarded as a place associated with fishing conditions, catches and fishing trips. Together with the fishing bridge on Kalvø, this provides another thematic approach to the bay, appealing to maritime interests in addition to swimming, hiking and nature observation.

For travel by bus, route 123 between Aabenraa and Haderslev is relevant, as it stops at Genner Beach. Other destinations useful for orientation are Kravlund, Bolderslev, Varnæs, Hellevad, Søttrup, Tinglev, Felsted and Rødekro.
