Harbour Landscape and Coastal Trails

Smygehamn combines a distinctive harbour landscape with coastal trails, a historic settlement pattern and opportunities for observing nature. When choosing your destination, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus on maritime history, walking and hiking routes, or seasonal nature experiences. The harbour of Smygehamn has 87 berths and 6 quay berths. It is located in a former limestone quarry that was filled in and converted into a harbour – a distinctive historical feature of the area.

There are also various route connections for active days. The Sydkustleden passes through Smygehuk. Skåneleden stage 3 runs through parts of Smygehamn and via the park to the lime kilns in Östra Torp. Another Skåneleden stage between Smygehuk and Trelleborg follows the coast and passes fishing villages, cultural landmarks and nature reserves in bloom. This makes it possible to combine coastal landscapes, cultural and historical traces and sections of nature according to different tour focuses, without equating the individual routes.

Fishing Village, Cultural History and Harbour Motifs

In the oldest part of Smygehamn, close to the beach, small, low rows of white-rendered houses have been preserved. They are arranged irregularly along narrow lanes and give the village a clearly recognisable historic structure. The fishing village of Smyge was first mentioned in 1657; at that time, it consisted of three houses, all of which belonged to the Crown.

Because of its well-preserved old settlement structure, its street network, the irregularly arranged houses with their associated gardens, and the numerous fishermen’s houses with roots in the 18th century, Smygehamn has been designated by the Swedish National Heritage Board as being of national cultural-historical interest. Köpmansmagasinet in Smygehuk was built in the 19th century. The caissons for the Falsterbo Canal were also built in the harbour of Smygehuk in the 1930s. Another attraction is Famntaget in Smygehuk, a sculpture by Axel Ebbe featuring female figures.

Creative art exhibitions take place in Smygehuk in summer. Smygehuk Fyr is a worthwhile destination to visit year-round and complements the cultural and maritime themes with views of the coast. For local orientation, bus route 190 operated by Skånetrafiken is also relevant: via the Smygehuk hamnen stop, it connects Trelleborg and Ystad with Smygehuk.

Nature Observation Throughout the Year

A bird migration observation site is located about 400 metres west of the Smygehuk lighthouse. Eider ducks migrate there in spring, while birds travel in the opposite direction in autumn; cranes also pass through this location. This approximate distance is tied to the lighthouse and does not describe the length of a route or the distance to accommodation. At the same time, it makes clear that Smygehamn and Smygehuk can be explored not only through harbour and cultural themes, but also through seasonal nature observation.
