Barum

Barum combines a distinctive lake landscape with traces of history and protected natural areas. Anyone planning a trip involving water, short hikes, cycling tours and archaeology will find several clearly distinct points of interest here: the free Ivöleden car ferry runs between Barum and Ivön, the “Genom Sjöriket” cycling route passes through a landscape with several large lakes, and nearby nature reserves offer a variety of paths along the water and through nature.

Ivösjön, ferry and the “Genom Sjöriket” route

The Ivöleden car ferry operates on Ivösjön between Barum and Ivön. This makes the lake one of the defining landmarks of the area. The “Genom Sjöriket” route is also relevant when planning a cycling trip: in Barum, it reaches the Ivöleden ferry and allows for an optional detour to Ivön.

The cycling route continues from Bäckaskog Castle along the main road to Barum. The ferry connection across Ivösjön complements this overland route with the optional crossing between Barum and Ivön. Its landscape is defined by a chain of lakes: “Genom Sjöriket” runs between Råbelövssjön, Oppmannasjön and Ivösjön.

Nature reserves with different trails

The nearby Ivö klack nature reserve has five marked circular trails. Their lengths range from 2.1 to 5.3 kilometres. There is a difference of 3.2 kilometres between the shortest and longest routes. A prominent feature is the nearby 130-metre-high hill of Klacken. From there, you can enjoy a view over Ivösjön.

Brinkahagen-Möllerödsnäs also has its own distinctive character. The nearby nature reserve is one of the richest sites in Northern Europe for ground-dwelling fungi. For a shorter visit, one path through each of the two areas is signposted as an easy walk.

On Ivö, the nearby Ugnsmunnarna nature reserve lies a few hundred metres north of the ferry landing. An old field track leads through the reserve to the shore of Ivösjön. The Ugnsmunnarna caves are located farther north along the shore.

The Frau von Barum and historical traces

Barum is also defined by an archaeological site. The Frau von Barum was buried in Barum, Sweden, almost 9,000 years ago. The inscription on the grave identifies the site as the burial place of the prehistoric fisherwoman from Barum. The grave also features a natural-stone memorial measuring approximately 15 metres in diameter.

Another historical reference leads to the shore of Oppmannasjön: in early summer 1939, farmer Oskar Larsson and farmhand Sven Eriksson carried out earthworks there. The burial site of the Frau von Barum is in Barum; the 1939 earthworks took place near the shore of Oppmannasjön.
