Discover Ã…hus: Medieval Town, Coast and Nature

Ã…hus combines the character of a seaside and summer resort, which the town has preserved since the late 19th century, with an unusually tangible medieval history. Ã…hus is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Sweden. If you would like to combine coastal landscapes, nature observation and historic sites, you will find various reasons to visit here during your stay.

History and Historic Sites

The Ã…hus Museum presents numerous archaeological finds in a town history exhibition, offering insights into life in medieval Ã…hus. The museum is located in the medieval town hall directly next to St. Mary's Church on the market square. The location on the market square brings together several historical points of reference: the medieval town hall, St. Mary's Church and the exhibition are immediately adjacent to one another. The Ã…hus Museum will be closed for the 2026 season and is scheduled to reopen in June 2027. This timing is particularly important when planning a museum visit.

Aosehus is the ruin of a medieval fortress built where the Helge å River once flowed into the sea. At Aosehus, the car park is next to the quay, while the castle ruins stand on a grassy hill. Thus, Aosehus brings together the former river mouth, the quay and the grassy hill as distinct spatial points of reference. You can reach Aosehus by regional bus to Åhus, getting off at the Järnvägsgatan stop. Another testimony to the past is Konventmuren, an 800-year-old remnant of the former Dominican convent in Åhus.

Nature, Trails and Viewpoints

Äspet is a coastal nature reserve near Åhus, immediately south of the northern mouth of the Helge å River. The reserve has two birdwatching towers, accessible from the car park in the eastern part. Kronoskogen complements these natural experiences with a bird lagoon and a viewing tower. This allows you to explore different landscapes in Åhus without separating the themes of the coast and birdwatching.

The sandy areas around Åhus are called Sånnarna and have been used by people since at least the Bronze Age. The Sånnarna Open-Air Museum conveys the area's living cultural landscape through information and a demonstration planting illustrating historical shifting cultivation up to the mid-20th century. The term shifting cultivation refers to a practice in which cultivation areas change and do not remain permanently in the same place. The signposted Sånnastigen loop leads from Åhus via Kavrövägen/Flötövägen and past the golf course to Sånnarna.

For a longer cycling route, the Stora Vattenriketrundan runs south from Kristianstad to Ã…hus, following the signs for Sydostleden. During opening hours, Kantarellbadet provides three beach wheelchairs for people with disabilities who need additional assistance accessing the water at the beach. This also documents specific support for access to the beach.
