Wankendorf lies on the edge of Holstein Switzerland in an area characterized by lakes; six lakes in the immediate surroundings can be reached on foot or by bicycle.
Nature
The Wankendorf lake district and the Bornhöved area are considered a terminal moraine. The landscape around Wankendorf is considered to have formed during the second and third advances.
There is a bathing area at Lake Schierensee. The 39-kilometre-long cycling tour Land between Stocksee, Schmalensee, Belau, Stolpe and Wahlstorf also passes through Wankendorf.
Culture
In 1894, the neo-Gothic church, the vicarage and the cemetery were built on the border between Wankendorf and Stolpe. The Wankendorf cemetery was established next to the neighboring church.
A lime-tree avenue leads from the church to the mausoleum of the church patron Bernhard Carl von Donner. Both the church and the mausoleum are protected historic monuments.
The Wankendorf Local History Museum is located at Bahnhofstr. 60. It presents permanent or special exhibitions on distinctive features and everyday life in the Wankendorf region.
Leisure
The skate park at the Old Railway Station in Wankendorf can be used year-round. During the summer season, guests in the Wankendorf lake district have access to a tennis facility with seven clay courts.
