Arjeplog: Lakes, Mountains and Sámi Culture

Galtispuoda, a low mountain just outside the town, offers sweeping views over the lakes and mountains of Arjeplog. The mountain reaches 800 metres above sea level and is considered easily accessible. Between landscapes, Sámi culture and winter activities, Arjeplog combines nature experiences with distinctive historical sites.

Landscape and Water

The nearby Märkberget nature reserve includes Märkberget and the powerful Märkforsen rapids in the Laisälven River. A path of around 1.5 kilometres runs along the rapids to a shelter and a fire pit. Along Vaukaleden, fishing opportunities accessible from pedestrian bridges in the centre of Arjeplog are available.

The municipality itself is also characterised by its fishing waters: Eight fly-fishing stretches have a combined total length of 105 kilometres. Arjeplog Church stands on a peninsula in Lake Hornavan, directly beside Arjeplog's market square. The church is open to visitors during the day.

Culture and History

In the centre, on Torget, the Silver Museum is located next to National Road 95, the Silver Road. The Silversalen exhibition comprises almost 700 Sámi silver objects dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The Mujttalus exhibition presents Sámi life on feast days and in everyday life.

Every summer, the Silver Museum offers guided tours of Doktorsgården. The building was the residence of Dr Einar Wallquist, the founder of the Silver Museum. Sofia-Magdalena Church was built between 1763 and 1767 according to plans by master builder Lars Ersson Sundström, by Johan Tengmark, as a cruciform wooden church with equally sized cross arms.

Arjeplog's winter market dates back to 1642 and continues to be a meeting place for community, reunions and trade. In the nearby cottage area of Adolfström, an exhibition house with models and photographs is open to the public. The exhibition focuses on mining at Nasafjäll and the transport of ore to the smelter in Adolfström.

Hiking, Fishing and Excursions

The Municipality of Arjeplog provides excursion guides to hiking trails and peaks. These local excursion resources focus on both trails in the surrounding area and mountain destinations. The Märkberget nature reserve connects the trail along the rapids with the shelter and fire pit.

The Polar Circle Tour starts in Arjeplog and follows Road 95, the Silver Road, to the Arctic Circle. The tour includes an outdoor lunch prepared by the guide over an open fire.

Winter and Snow Sports

Guided snowmobile tours and snowmobile rentals are available in Arjeplog. A total of 1,600 kilometres of prepared snowmobile trails and routes are available. On ice-fishing tours, the fishing spot is reached by a large sled pulled by a snowmobile.

For cross-country skiing, Djuptjärn has illuminated trails measuring 1, 2.5, 5 and 20 kilometres. Öberget offers a 2.5-kilometre illuminated cross-country ski trail. Galtis is one of two alpine ski resorts listed for Arjeplog.

Local Cuisine

During the Edible Country experience, guests gather ingredients together with local guides, cook and eat together. The menu for this experience in Arjeplog is inspired by forests, lakes and meadows.

Arvidsjaur Airport is 100 kilometres from Arjeplog; onward travel is possible by airport transfer or rental car.
