Mellanström between Mähkávrrie and Uddjaur
Accommodation in Mellanström
Mellanström lies on a narrow peninsula between Lake Mähkávrrie to the west and Veålbmá Bay in Uddjaur to the east. This location provides a clear point of reference for anyone looking to understand the area in terms of its waters, fishing or traces of history.
Fishing waters and fish species
In 2026, a downloadable map was available showing the waters within the Mellanström fisheries conservation area. There are many good fishing waters in this area; possible catches include perch, pike, grayling, whitefish and trout. The map and species list offer two different points of reference for planning: they provide guidance on the waters and the fish species that may be found there.
At Mellanström Fishing Camp, guests can fish from the camp’s pier or from the shore of Lake Maakaure. Maakaure is connected to Storavan. When choosing where to fish, the pier and the lakeshore offer two different options; the connection to Storavan adds a specific reference to the waters.
Several rest areas in Mellanström are also used by passing tourists who are not fishing. This differs from the dedicated fishing opportunities at the camp: even those travelling without fishing gear can find their own connection to the area through the rest areas.
Uddjaur and traces of history
Nearby, Veälbmábuovđđa offers views of the Uddjaur lake landscape, which is dotted with numerous islands. Here, the landscape takes centre stage, while the fishing waters offer a different focus. Those weighing up both options when planning a trip can distinguish between an interest in fishing and the views of the islands.
Mellanström’s history begins with the former Lappskatteland of Kaskejaur. It is one of the oldest documented Lappskatteland areas in the Arjeplog parish. This historical connection adds a specific local history, rooted in Kaskejaur and the parish, to the water-related themes.
Kasker, too, has a history closely connected to water and transport. Its location on the currents between Uddjaur and Storavan yielded large quantities of fish and made Kasker an important landing place for boat traffic. When steamboat services on the lakes of Arjeplog began in the late 1880s, a steamboat landing was built in Kasker. This makes it possible to distinguish between general boat traffic and the steamboat services that began later.
Historical accounts describe the Kaskersejte as having been revered until the recent past. According to these accounts, people in the surrounding area, including Swedes, believed that the Kaskersejte influenced the annual harvest of the Kasker settlement. This tradition connects the place with a historical belief about the Kaskersejte’s influence on the harvest; it belongs to a different local history from fishing and shipping.
