Brundby – History, Village Ponds and Trails

Brundby is a place whose character can be discovered through its history, protected village structures and special opportunities to observe nature. A rare mill with a eventful history

Brundby Stubmølle is at the heart of the village’s history. It was moved to its present location on Kolhøj and erected there in 1817. However, its history goes back considerably further: it milled its first flour at the beginning of the 17th century and processed grain until 1939. In 1683, Brundby Stubmølle was sold to Samsø.

The mill is one of only 16 surviving post mills in Denmark. It is also considered the oldest or at least the second-oldest post mill in the country. Visitors can explore it independently. If you would like a guided tour of Brundby Stubmølle, visits are available during opening hours. This means that the mill can be included in your exploration of the village either independently or as part of a guided tour.

Village Ponds, Hills and Views as Far as Ballen

Brundby was built behind protective hilltops, so that the village could not be seen from the sea. Today, three hills in Brundby offer views. From Brundby Stubmølle, the view extends as far as Ballen, adding another perspective on the surrounding area to the building’s historical significance.

There are three village ponds in the village. A small historic pond has stepping stones that allow you to cross it without getting your feet wet. Salamanders, insects and frogs can be observed there. Brundby also has a Reunification Square, which is considered a worthwhile stop, as well as a well-preserved well on the road at Brundby Hovedgade 24.

Orientation for Active Days

Several colour-coded signs in Brundby indicate the local routes. On some trails, you can cycle or go horseback riding; these trails are marked with symbols. The signs and symbols make it clear when planning which trails are designated for these activities. In addition to its historic sites, Brundby therefore offers practical guidance for visitors who want to explore the village and its surroundings actively.

Music and Danish Cuisine

Brundby Hotel is known as Denmark’s only RockHotel and hosts intimate concerts. The restaurant at Brundby Hotel serves classic Danish cuisine featuring produce from the island and, where possible, organic ingredients. Alongside the mill, village ponds and views, music is therefore another documented feature that shapes Brundby as a destination.
