Gammel Løgten on Kalø Vig: Beach, Nature and History

The coast at Gammel Løgten Strand combines white sand and shallow water with a shoreline where beach days, nature watching and water sports appeal to different travel interests. The history of the area also remains present on Kalø Vig: Gammel Løgten grew up around the loading place of the Vosnæsgård estate.

Beach and Water Activities

Gammel Løgten Strand offers opportunities for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP); there is also a long bathing jetty at Rosenholm Bådelaug. Tables, benches and a permanent barbecue area are available. If you would like to explore the beach’s wildlife, you can use dip nets and wade in the shallow water. Fishing is possible along the coast at Gammel Løgten Strand as far as Vosnæs Pynt. Rodskov Havkajak is based on the beach at Rosenholm Bådelaug, between Gammel Løgten Strand and Ugelbølle Strand, and offers sea kayaking courses for beginners and experienced paddlers in spring and autumn.

Protected Landscape on Kalø Vig

The nearby Grevelund landscape is protected along Kalø Vig. Its hills stretch from Kalø Vig towards Skødstrup and Løgten; a circular route along existing field and asphalt roads can be completed there in about an hour. Vosnæsgård is also nearby: the estate lies at the transition between Vosnæsgård Forest and large estate fields that slope down towards Kalø Vig. Vosnæsgård has been known since the Middle Ages as the principal estate in the village of Vosnæs. Today, the terraced Baroque garden has the character of an English landscape garden.

Church and Iron Age Attractions

The nearby Skødstrup Church, dating from 1180, is part of the area’s cultural history. The building is Romanesque; the tower and porch were added in the Late Middle Ages. On the chancel side, there is a bench with a view over Kaløvig Bay. The nearby Jernalderstien is an experiential trail with information boards. It conveys how people lived and worked in Skødstrup’s Iron Age society around 2,000 years ago.

Gammel Løgten’s Historic Loading Place

Gammel Løgten was a historic landing place for small vessels transporting goods. Small-scale shipping there carried people, animals and goods to and from Aarhus. Timber and other goods continued to be shipped from the bridge at the historic shipping site for several years after its heyday. The former shipping site continued to operate into the 20th century, with large warehouses and trading activities. Vosnæs Avlsgård included an inn known as Gammel Løgten, which later became a forester’s residence. The name Løgten is associated with a burning tar barrel set up as a sea mark for small boats.
