Ajstrup Between Sandy Beach and Local History

Ajstrup Beach is a family-friendly sandy beach and shapes the maritime side of the visit. Ajstrup lies at the northern foot of Møllebakke. At the same time, the village has largely preserved the settlement pattern it had around 1800. The coast provides the sandy beach, while Møllebakke and the preserved local structure establish other spatial and historical points of reference. In Ajstrup, beach days and consideration of the older local structure can be treated as separate focal points.

Beach days by the water: toilets and parking

There are several toilets at Ajstrup Beach, including an accessible toilet. The car park at Ajstrup Beach serves as a starting point for swimming or for a walk along the water. The accessible toilet is therefore just as useful for practical orientation as the other toilets at the beach. For a stay by the water, the day can be divided between swimming time and a walk along the shore.

Getting to the ends of the beach

There are car parks at both ends of Ajstrup Beach, in the south and in the north. Both are accessed via Ajstrup Strandvej. The two ends of the beach are therefore clearly distinguished spatially, even though both are accessed via Ajstrup Strandvej. The two car parks make it possible to plan the southern or northern section of the beach as the starting point for time by the water as early as when planning the day.

Landscape between coast and inland

Møllebakke is a hill approximately three-quarters of a kilometre long between Ajstrup and Lillenor. When planning a walk, the approximate length of Møllebakke can be used as a rough guide; it remains an approximation. Elmose is a distinctive green area between Ajstrup Strandvej and Norsmindevej. Ajstrup Skoleskov is a special woodland area in Aarhus dedicated to schoolchildren.

Settlement pattern and field district

Ajstrup shares the Østerlavet field district with small settlements north and south of the village. The largely preserved settlement pattern from around 1800 is one of Ajstrup’s historical points of reference. For those interested in culture, the emphasis here is on the evolved structure, not just on a single building.

Ajstrup Forsamlingshus

Ajstrup Forsamlingshus was built in 1909. Annual Fastelavn celebrations used to be held in the building. These celebrations included hitting a barrel filled with sweets. The Fastelavn celebrations belong to the building’s earlier history and should not be understood as a current events offering. In its history, the building combines a fixed point in time, 1909, with an earlier annual festival tradition. The year of construction, 1909, stands alongside the former festival tradition. In Ajstrup, the Forsamlingshus, alongside the preserved settlement pattern, serves as an independent historical point of reference.
