Groß-Stresow on Stresow Bay

Groß-Stresow is located on Stresow Bay, part of the Rügischer Bodden lagoon, and combines lagoon landscapes with scenic views and history. From an elevated position, you can look out over the bay. Along the coastal route near Muglitzer Ort, you can see the northern tip of Vilm Island as well as Reddevitzer Höft and Zickersches Höft on the Mönchgut peninsula. This allows you to get to know the area from two perspectives: through the landscape by the water and through its historical traces.

Hiking and cycling around Groß-Stresow

For an active day, there are two differently designed hiking options. The hiking route from Putbus to Groß-Stresow is approximately 8.5 km long. It combines a journey on the historic narrow-gauge railway “Rasender Roland” with a walk from the “Seelvitz” stop in the direction of Groß-Stresow. The 13 km-long, easy “Mönchgut – Großstone Graves and Lagoon” hiking route, with little elevation gain, leads through Groß-Stresow and along Stresow Bay. There are many opportunities for swimming there. The combination of the route and the bay therefore suits day plans that bring together physical activity and time by the water. The different distances and the low elevation gain of the longer route provide clear guidance when choosing between a shorter connection and a more extensive tour. The “In the Footsteps of Prince Malte” cycle route also passes through Groß-Stresow; along this route, there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments in Groß-Stresow.

Natural surroundings by the bay

The natural area includes the “Quellsumpf Ziegensteine bei Groß Stresow” nature reserve, which is part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve. There is a small rest area at the Ziegensteine.

Prussian Columns and Local History

History is also visible in Groß-Stresow. The column in Groß-Stresow bore a statue of Frederick William I made of Saxon sandstone, measuring more than three metres; it was erected on an elevation paved with natural stone. The 15-metre-high Stresow Prussian Column was dismantled in 1991 because it was in danger of collapsing; in 2014, the last of the two Prussian columns was re-erected. The “Verräterhaus” commemorates the battle between Prussia, Denmark and Sweden near Groß-Stresow during the Great Northern War. In front of the present-day museum in the Verräterhaus stands a statue of the Prussian King Frederick William I.
