Lonvitz between megalithic tombs and cycle path

The eastern section of the “Holy Sites themed trail” cycle path leads through Lonvitz and Vilmnitz towards the Bodden. The German Avenue Road also runs through Lonvitz. Several megalithic tombs are located in the village and its surroundings, including the “Fliederbusch” tomb and the “Blocksberg” tomb. Thus, cycle route, road route and historic burial sites come together in Lonvitz, without their individual characteristics necessarily being equated.

Megalithic tombs near Lonvitz

Another megalithic tomb in Lonvitz is located on the western side of the railway line, in a wooded area directly on the embankment. Its imposing capstone has survived, while the second capstone is missing. The location by the railway line and at the edge of the woodland describes the site just as specifically as the surviving capstone describes the tomb’s structural condition.

The “Fliederbusch” tomb near Lonvitz is also called “Fleederbarg”. It is approximately 30 m long and has a trapezoidal long barrow. Cup marks can be seen on the capstones and on the narrow side of the long barrow. Characteristic pottery finds suggest that later Slavic burials took place here. The tomb is located at the road junction between Putbus and Vilmnitz, at the turn-off to Zirkow. In addition to the capstone, the trapezoidal long barrow is one of the structural features of this tomb.

In the vicinity of Lonvitz, north of Posewald on the road from Lonvitz to Zirkow, there is also the “Blocksberg” megalithic tomb. This tomb therefore also has a specific connection to a road, which differs from the location of the Fliederbusch tomb by the railway line and junction.

Cycle path with clear signage

The “Holy Sites themed trail” cycle path is marked with signs showing a yellow sun on a dark background. When cycling, the yellow sun forms a clear visual symbol alongside the trail’s full name. This motif can serve as a navigational aid on a cycling tour, while the route through Lonvitz and Vilmnitz towards the Bodden defines the geographical framework. The trail name and sign motif are part of the signage for the same route.

Cape Muglitzer Ort is located in the immediate surroundings of Lonvitz. The Schlosspark park is also located nearby. The island of Pulitz and the island of Rügen are located in the area around Lonvitz. Bergen Church, St. Mary’s, is also located there. Ruschbrink Island is likewise situated in the vicinity of Lonvitz. Motocrossbahn, a park, is also located in the surrounding area. Further afield in the region around Lonvitz is the Tierpark Stralsund zoo.
