A cobblestone avenue in the Müggenburg area of Neuenkirchen leads to Müggenburg Water Castle. Neuenkirchen near Anklam is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district.

Culture and History

Müggenburg Water Castle was first documented in 1355 as “Castro Mügghenborg.” The site, located in the lowlands, was the seat of the Pomeranian Nienkerken family. In 1434, most of the complex was destroyed; the 28-metre-high keep survived.

Several buildings from the historic Müggenburg estate complex have been preserved in the village. The present manor house of the water castle was built between 1889 and 1891 in the neo-Gothic style, behind a moat up to 20 metres wide. Its entrance hall features a ribbed vault.

The old tower of the water castle can be climbed. In clear weather, the view from the castle tower extends from Anklam to the Brohmer and Helpter Hills.

The “Grafenwinkel” excursion route leads through Neuenkirchen on the way to Spantekow.
