The Village Church and the Discovery of the Font

Boldekow’s village church is originally medieval and was redesigned in the Baroque style when it was rebuilt. Its half-timbered tower is another distinctive architectural feature. The history of the baptismal font also spans different periods: when the church’s foundations were uncovered, the base and basin of a medieval baptismal font were found. Previously, both parts had served as foundations beneath two gallery pillars.

In a 2015 article, an expert estimated that the baptismal font dated to 1320. This date is an expert estimate, not a definitive dating. Together with the church’s medieval origins and Baroque redesign, it reveals an architectural history that is not confined to a single period.

Zinzow: Estate Grounds, Carriages and Events

At the heart of the historic estate grounds in Zinzow stands a Neo-Baroque manor house. It was built around the turn of the century and was formerly the family residence of the Counts of Schwerin. The working horse stable represents another chapter in the estate’s history: dating from the 18th century, it is the oldest building on the estate. It houses a large collection of historic carriages, which is open to visitors.

Twice a year, the estate grounds provide the setting for the Lily of the Valley Market and the St. Martin’s Market; both markets take place annually. Check the dates for your intended year of travel. The grounds also regularly host cultural events such as Kunst:Offen and Open Monument Day.

The Zinzow estate distillery is also part of what the estate offers: fruit from the region is handcrafted there into fine fruit brandies, spirits and liqueurs. The distiller is happy to introduce visitors to the products; availability may vary. Accommodation in Zinzow includes five holiday apartments, as well as a coachman’s house and a gardener’s house. Check availability with the operator before travelling. The estate is also located along routes through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that can be travelled on horseback or by bicycle.

Putzar: Manor House Ruins and Church Art

Putzar is home to the ruins of two manor houses, surrounded by a landscape park laid out according to plans by garden director Ferdinand Jühlke. The older Ulrich Building had already fallen into disrepair by the 18th century. The church in Putzar was built in 1560 under Ulrich von Schwerin.

Among its notable furnishings is a wooden-beam ceiling with figurative and ornamental Baroque-style painting from the 17th century. The large pulpit altar, a Renaissance work, also dates from the 17th century. The pulpit is decorated with carvings and oil paintings depicting scenes from the Passion. The organ gallery, dating from 1721, is supported by four black figures. These details show the different forms of sacred art and architectural design found within Putzar Church.
