Neu Gaarz: Manor House History and Lakes

Neu Gaarz combines a varied manor house history with Bergsee, forested shores, cycling tours and opportunities on the water.

The manor house and its eventful history

The Neu Gaarz manor house was first mentioned in 1698. Around sixty years later, it was transformed into a Baroque building with Neoclassical detailing. Its construction history thus reflects two defining stylistic periods. The manor house is not associated with just one historical period; over time, it has served various purposes.

The Neu Gaarz manor house and its outbuildings were temporarily used as the “Neu Gaarz Estate Art and Culture Colony.” They were subsequently converted into holiday accommodation and were later also used as a hunting and angling school. Riding lessons are offered at the Neu Gaarz manor house. This succession of uses applies to both the main building and the outbuildings.

Bergsee, bathing area and nature trail

Southwest of Neu Gaarz, a natural bathing area with a sunbathing lawn is located on Bergsee. A nature trail is also located on Bergsee southwest of Neu Gaarz. Both places are therefore on the same lake and appeal to different interests: you can plan Bergsee as a destination for a break by the water or include the nature trail as a separate part of your day. Bergsee combines a bathing area, sunbathing lawn and nature trail; at Hofsee, by contrast, the almost completely forested shore defines the character of the landscape.

Cycling and landscapes by the water

The “Around the Klocksiner Lakes” cycling tour leads to Neu Gaarz and continues via Neu Gaarz to Sophienhof. This connects the village with a tour route for cycling travellers. The shore of Hofsee is almost completely forested. Those weighing up cycling experiences, bathing areas and quieter lake shores when planning their trip will find a range of specific themes in Neu Gaarz.

Canoeing, boating and day cruisers

There are opportunities for canoeing in and around Neu Gaarz, as well as for exploring the lakes by boat. The mooring for the day cruiser tours offered by the Neu Gaarz manor house is located on Jabelscher See by the MĂĽritz fishermen.

Glassworks and the origin of the estate village

The glassworks located between Alt Gaarz and Neu Gaarz ceased operations in 1749. The estate village of Neu Gaarz probably developed from a glassworks settlement. Together with the later development of the manor house, this creates a villagescape in which earlier craft history, the estate complex and present-day opportunities on the water exist side by side. For those interested in culture, the manor house history and the estate village’s probable origins in a glassworks settlement complement each other. For you, this connection offers an objective way to approach Neu Gaarz: the landscape can be experienced through lakeshores and activities, while the village’s history has several historical chapters to explore.
