Lake, Island and Waterbirds
The area around Lake Torgelower See is a landscape conservation area, designated in particular to protect waterbirds. In the northern part of the lake lies an island that is about 150 to 200 years old. Cormorants have settled there since 1972; the island is also a breeding site for mallards, gadwalls and other duck species. The combination of a landscape conservation area and an island with several named bird species puts the natural environment around the lake at the heart of the village’s character.
Torgelow Castle also has an extensive landscaped park. Its design incorporated the surrounding landscape, and the park is home mainly to protected waterbirds. Those interested in nature can therefore explore both the area around the lake and the park as distinct aspects of the destination. The information about the birds refers to different places: the island in the northern part of the lake and the castle’s landscaped park.
Castle and Cycling Routes
Torgelow Castle was built to plans by Otto March and inaugurated in 1904. It stands on the western shore of Lake Torgelower See. A cycling loop through the Mecklenburg Lake District passes through Carlsruh to Torgelow am See and, in the village, to the castle. Cyclists are allowed to cross the castle grounds. When planning your rides, both the route via Carlsruh to the castle and the expressly permitted crossing of the grounds are relevant.
A 30 km cycling loop goes around Lake Torgelower See. You can consider this circular route as a cycling option in its own right, or follow the tour that passes through Carlsruh to the castle. There is also a small, hidden bathing spot on the shore outside the castle grounds. Cycling, the loop around the lake and the bathing spot appeal to different interests; they should not be assumed to form a single route.
Traces from Different Eras
The Heistersteine megalithic tomb lies in the Seeblänken forest near Torgelow am See. It was built between 3000 and 1800 BCE and served as a communal burial site for a clan. It thus offers a different historical point of reference from the castle, which was inaugurated in 1904: the Heistersteine date from a much earlier period, while Torgelow Castle is associated with Otto March and its construction history.
Historic Bread Oven and Getting There
The Historic Bread Oven in Torgelow am See stands on Backofenstraße and was built at a historic site. Its construction used material salvaged from the demolition of the former brickworks, which was about 200 years old. Bread from the Historic Bread Oven is available at village festivals. This brings together a specific location in present-day Torgelow am See, reused building material and an occasion when bread from the oven is offered.
For Torgelow Castle, Waren an der Müritz is the nearest railway station in the surrounding area.
