Groß Godems: Hotels and Accommodations

Groß Godems reveals its historic character in a village church dating from the 17th century: The half-timbered building dates from 1688. Mixed and pine forests typical of Mecklenburg shape the landscape around the village.

History and Townscape

The church features painted window panes from 1688 depicting family coats of arms and biblical scenes. Next to the church stands an open wooden bell tower with two bells. One of the bells was cast in Wismar in 1486.

The settlement of Groß Godems dates back to the Bronze Age. The village is considered an Angerdorf, a village arranged around a central green: The farmsteads are grouped around the church in a defensive layout. In 1291, Groß Godems was recorded under the name Wodamiz.

Nature on the Sonnenberg

The Sonnenberg is a glacial terminal moraine. A 116-hectare nature reserve is located in the forested area there. The Douglas fir stands on the Sonnenberg are considered unique in Europe. They include the Starke Douglasie, planted in 1893, which is around 50 metres tall.

The legendary site known as Breite Stein can also be visited in the Sonnenberg area.

Paths and Surroundings

The Sonnenberg hiking trail is around 11.5 kilometres long, while the “Hiking along the Roter Bach” route is approximately 6 kilometres. The hike “Hiking near Parchim: Around the Sonnenberg” leads along the Parchim–Groß Godems road and continues via the Godemser Stadtweg.

Groß Godems has a road connection to the A 24. From the Sonnenberg area, the A 24 serves as an access route towards Groß Godems. Thanks to its proximity to Parchim, there are shopping facilities in the immediate vicinity of Groß Godems. For cyclists, Groß Godems offers recreation away from heavily frequented holiday destinations.
