Geographical Location

Kritzmow is situated on slightly elevated land between the valleys of the Warnow and Waidbach rivers and directly borders the southwest of Rostock.

The municipality comprises the four localities of Groß Schwaß, Klein Schwaß, Klein Stove, and Kritzmow.

Culture and History

Klein Schwaß was first documented in 1219 in connection with the founding and endowment of Sonnenkamp Abbey and, according to the surviving records, is considered the oldest locality in the municipality.

Kritzmow was first documented in 1270 under the name “Critzelmow.” In 1301, King Eric of Denmark granted Doberan Abbey ownership of the village of Kritzmow.

For centuries, Kritzmow and Klein Schwaß were shaped by the rule of the abbey. Historically, Groß Schwaß and Klein Stove were associated with Rostock’s hospitals Zum Heiligen Geist and Zum Heiligen Georg.
