Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen lies between the lower Warnow and Bad Doberan, near the Baltic Sea coast. The municipality includes a nearly one-kilometer-long nature reserve directly along the Stoltera cliffs.
Culture and History
The Findling Garden is located in the center of Lichtenhagen. It opened in September 2008 and extends across five areas. The grounds feature stones from the municipality, some of which are arranged as constellations. Old varieties of fruit and additional planted green spaces complement the garden.
Lichtenhagen village church was first mentioned in 1319. It is a church built largely from unworked fieldstones during the transitional period between Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Its rectangular choir, dating from the 13th century, is the oldest part and contains 14th-century vault paintings.
The 42-meter-high west tower has a distinctive roof shaped like a “bishop’s mitre.” A comprehensive restoration began in 1892 and continued from 1998 in several phases with the support of a historic preservation association.
