Church and natural monument in Biendorf

The early Gothic church in Biendorf was built from fieldstone and bricks around the turn of the 14th century. Its furnishings include a late Renaissance pulpit dating from 1665. Another distinctive feature is a very old baptismal font made of red granite, measuring about one metre in diameter. The date of the pulpit and the approximate size of the baptismal font offer two different points of reference for understanding the church’s furnishings.

Two lime trees kneel in front of the church, making them a rarely seen natural monument. This brings a building with several historic features and a natural monument together in one place. The village also has a creative nature playground and a toboggan run. Visitors interested in church art, nature or outdoor activities can thus find a range of local attractions.

Nature trails and activities in the municipality

The nature trail through the municipality is 20 kilometres long and features themed stops in eight localities. Highly visible honeycomb-shaped signs mark the route, which connects the localities and winds through the landscape. The trail therefore extends beyond Biendorf itself. Quiet roads and paths through fields, meadows and forests are also suitable for cycling. A bike tour through the municipality takes you through the Baltic coastal landscape, with its gently rolling terminal moraines.

The municipality also offers a geocaching project: in Biendorf and neighbouring municipalities within the Neubukow-Salzhaff administrative district, there are seven routes with marked stops, questions and riddles about the region. The nature trail and geocaching therefore have different focuses: one links stops across the localities, while the other incorporates riddles and neighbouring municipalities. Horse-riding lessons for children are available in Wischuer. There, the Fit-Platz exercise area and movement garden also offer gentle physical activity using exercise equipment.

Manor houses and history in other localities

Westenbrügge is home to a well-preserved manor estate with a 300-year-old, newly renovated manor house featuring a mezzanine floor. In the manor park, a 200-year-old avenue of lime trees planted in a cross-shaped layout stands near the 13th-century church. The Hellbach winds through Westenbrügge; in the past, it fed the manor house’s moat. The manor estate, park avenue and stream each offer a different glimpse into the history and landscape of this locality.

In Büttelkow, a renovated manor house stands amid a park with a small lake that once surrounded an old moated castle. An art trail passes the manor house, also known as the “castle”, crosses open fields and the forest settlement, and then loops back. In Gersdorf, the manor house is associated with the birth of the Prussian general Count von Moltke, who was born there. The manor houses in Büttelkow and Gersdorf thus offer different historical points of interest, while the route in Büttelkow also describes a specific path through open fields and the forest settlement.
