Virserum: Art, Museums and Lakeside Trails
Accommodation in Virserum
Anyone wishing to combine culture and nature in Virserum will find various starting points for planning their trip: contemporary art, industrial history, historic buildings, paths through forests and hilly terrain, and experiences by the lakes. Your choice of accommodation can therefore be based on whether you mainly want to explore museums and local history or plan to spend time being active outdoors.
Art, Crafts and History
Virserums Konsthall presents contemporary art in an exhibition space of 1,600 m². It opened in 1998. The Pappershuset building has a vaulted roof made of glulam arches and diffuse lighting, making the architecture itself part of the visit.
The region's industrial history is also diverse. Virserums möbelindustrimuseum is a living industrial museum and a reproduction of a 1920s furniture factory. At the Telemuseum, the history of telecommunications spans 650 m². There, you can trace its development over approximately 100 years – from old manual exchanges to today's satellite technology. The exhibition also includes 300 landline telephones.
At Hembygdspark, you can learn about historic building methods and home furnishings. The park contains around 15 buildings dating from the early 17th to the 20th century; the collections span from the Stone Age to the present day. Vävstuga has up to 30 looms spread across two floors. Fröåsa Handpappersbruk is Sweden's only surviving handmade paper mill. Another historic connection is the narrow-gauge railway between Västervik and Virserum, which was the first railway line in Sweden to be declared a listed historic monument.
The market square is home to the statue of Nils Dacke, created by Arvid Källström. Dacke was the leader of the uprising against Gustav Wasa. The statue was erected in 1956 to commemorate Nils Dacke and the events of the Dacke uprising.
Walking Trails, Lakes and Active Days
Länsmansgårdsängen Nature Reserve is located northwest of Virserum on the shore of Lake Virserum. It is a popular walking area with several paths and benches. For longer routes, you can compare Virserumsleden and Hjortleden: both initially share 6 km before separating. Virserumsleden is approximately 9 km long, while Hjortleden is 19 km; both pass through forests and hilly terrain, following routes past lakes.
Dackestupet offers downhill skiing and mountain biking trails. The mountain bike trails start at the top of the ski slope; there are parking spaces, a skills park and fire pits there. This makes it possible to alternate between longer routes, mountain biking and winter sports when planning your day, without implying that these activities belong to the same season or have the same availability.
The activity park in central Virserum has seating areas, boules courts and a barbecue area. Several sections have been adapted for wheelchair users. The park is located by the water; this proximity to the water provides opportunities for a boat launching area. From Virserum, you can also travel towards Flaten on a rail bike. Flaten is 10 km north of Virserum.
Events and Reasons to Travel
Virserums Musikdagar has been held since 1997 during the week after Midsummer. At the beginning of August, Dacketräffen takes place in Virserum, attracting motorcycle enthusiasts from all over Sweden and Europe. If you choose your accommodation based on a specific reason for travelling, these dates may be relevant when planning your trip.
