Historic town centre with a distinctive history

Gamleby is a destination for travellers who want to get to know a place through its history, distinctive buildings and cultural meeting places. The historical connection begins at an unusual point: Gamleby is located where the town of Västervik stood until 1433. This past is not reflected in a single attraction, but in several different examples of the town’s history and built heritage.

The triangular market square provides a distinctive point of orientation. It is one of only a few of its kind in all of Sweden and gives Gamleby a clearly recognisable historical feature. The Gamleby kyrka, inaugurated in 1837, is part of the town’s more recent architectural history. The church contains several historic furnishings that are worth seeing. Another historical reference is Sankta Gertruds kyrka: it was a stone building without a tower that was used from the 12th century onwards. The two churches represent different periods in the town’s history.

Concerts are also held at the Kulturhus. A paved route and a distinctive high point

The Gamleby Xrundan is approximately 3.2 kilometres long, runs on paved surfaces and begins at the intersection by the cemetery and the centre’s car park.

Garpedansberget is located in Gamleby and is 70 metres high. The Xrundan and the mountain therefore offer different features of the town: a paved route and a high point.

Sports activities in different seasons

At Tjustvallen, the activities change with the season. In winter, public skating takes place on the artificially iced skating rink; there is also an artificially iced bandy rink there. During the summer half of the year, tennis is played at Tjustvallen. Dances are held every year at Gamleby Folkpark independently of this, while concerts and various events take place at Gamleby Kulturhus.
