Västervik – Archipelago, Maritime History and Experiences in Nature

Stegeholm originally protected the entrance to the bay and the medieval merchant settlement of Västervik. The castle ruins host the Visfestivalen every year. The medieval church was built in several stages: the choir and sacristy date from the 1430s, the nave was built around 1450, and the tower around 1670. The BOATMAN exhibition – the maritime heritage – presents Tjustökor built using the clinker-building method classified by UNESCO. The VR experience focuses on the individual ship Mars Makalös, while Sjöfartshallen conveys maritime history through adventures, ships and shipping companies. Those who want to learn about the town’s history not only through exhibitions can take the guided town walk offered by Västerviks Museum. It covers the history of the town, its buildings and its inhabitants. Psykiatriska museet preserves one of the few remaining facilities from the formerly closed world of psychiatric care.

Kayaking and Boat Trips in the Archipelago

When kayaking, you can start within the town and paddle north along Gamlebyviken. The Gamlebyviken runt route can be started in Västervik or in Gamleby. When completing the full circuit of the bay, it is 41 kilometres long. There is also a seasonally varying boat service for trips to the islands: smaller boats run year-round from Västervik to the islands of the archipelago, while larger boats also operate in summer. Gränsö and Views over the Town

The Gränsö nature reserve is located close to the centre of Västervik. The 12-kilometre Gränsöleden trail runs around the protected area on the Gränsö peninsula. For further orientation, Unos Torn offers a fixed vantage point: the tower is 18 metres high, and its viewing platform is 34 metres above sea level.
