Tingsted: Church Art and Cycling Route

Tingsted Church is a wayside church with remarkable historic furnishings.

Tingsted Church and its Art Treasures

It consists of a Romanesque chancel with an apse and a nave. A tower and a porch were added in the Late Middle Ages. The chancel and nave retain murals created around 1500 by the Elmelunde workshop. The church also has a 17th-century altarpiece and pulpit. The paintings dating from around 1500 and the furnishings from the 17th century therefore belong to different periods within the same church interior. For those interested in culture, a visit to the church remains closely tied to specific architectural elements and furnishings.

Its history also reaches far back. In 1325, Tingsted Church was the setting for the settlement between Christopher II and Marshal Ludvig Eberstein. The building therefore represents not only sacred art, but also the political and legal history of the area. The 1325 settlement is explicitly associated with the church; the Thing held at a later date, by contrast, took place at the Thing site to the west.

The Thing Site and Medieval Legal History

The historic Tingsted Thing site was located immediately west of Tingsted Church. Court hearings and proclamations of judgments took place there. A particularly precisely dated event occurred on 25 May 1512: in the personal presence of King Hans, a Thing was held at the site at which a legal dispute between the bishop and the feudal lord was decided. The site was therefore outside the church building and immediately to its west.

Pastureland and the “Ud i skoven” Cycling Route

North of the church hill, Tåderup Vicarage stands on a raised hilltop. A substantial part of the area between Tåderup Vicarage and Tingsted Church is used as pastureland.

For active days, the 28-kilometre “Ud i skoven” cycling route leads to Tingsted. Along the route, you can take a break by the church in Tingsted and view the murals by the Elmelunde Master. The route length of 28 kilometres is the clear planning figure for a cycling excursion to Tingsted. The fixed route length and the stop at the church provide two specific reference points for planning your day. The break at the church connects the ride with a specific viewing of the murals without separating the historic site from the route.
