Gedser: Southern Tip, Bird Migration and Railway History

Nature at the Southern Tip

At Gedser’s southern tip, tens of thousands of migratory birds can be observed in spring and autumn. At Gedser Odde, the Gedser Bird Observatory offers, among other things, bird walks as well as information about birds and the work of the station. The station rings birds mainly in the lighthouse garden by the station and also, among other places, in Vesterhave. This gives birdlife in Gedser a concrete as well as seasonal place in your travel planning.

Another distinctive natural feature is Sydstenen. The erratic boulder weighs about four tonnes and is probably one billion years old. Sydstenen originated in Sweden and was transported by masses of ice to southern Falster about 15,000 years ago. Lighthouse, Views and Paths

Gedser Fyr was completed in 1801 and put into operation in 1802. From Gedser, you can walk along the beach to Gedser Fyr. Gedser Water Tower offers a different view of the town: from there, expansive views extend across Denmark’s southern tip, the town of Gedser, the ferry port, the marina, and the surrounding area and nature. Gedser Water Tower has seasonal opening arrangements, with summer opening; visits outside the summer season are possible by appointment.

Railways and Regional Culture

Gedser Remise is a railway museum that offers insights into the golden age of railways. Visitors can experience historic locomotives, railway carriages and authentic working environments in the old engine-shed buildings. In summer and during the Easter holidays, Gedser Remise operates trips with historic trains between Nykøbing F and Gedser Remise. The Remiseexpress runs circular tours through Gedser as well as bookable tours in the local area.

Gedser Remise also includes the Gule Palæ. It is a museum in a former command post from the Olsen Gang film “Olsenbanden på Sporet”. The Sorte Geomuseum provides a different cultural focus and displays fossils, minerals and amber. In this way, Gedser’s range extends from technological and film history to geological finds.

Getting Around Gedser

Gedser Odde can be reached by car via the E55. From Gedser, the access route follows Langgade and Gedser Fyrvej to the lighthouse and the headland. Those arriving by bus can take Movia bus 740 from Nykøbing F. Station towards Gedser Færge; it stops at Torvet in Gedser.

An Audio Walk Through Gedser

KLANG KØSTEN was inaugurated in Gedser on a Sunday, 28 June, as an artistic audio walk. Via a free app, the five-kilometre route conveyed stories and local voices all the way to Denmark’s southernmost point.
