Stubbekøbing between the harbour, old town and Grønsund

Harbour, ferry and views across the Grønsund

Stubbekøbing combines a harbour atmosphere, historic urban structures and paths into the countryside. If you enjoy spending your days between maritime impressions and discoveries on land, the harbour provides a distinctive point of reference. The IDA ferry operates seasonally between Stubbekøbing and Bogø and carries people, bicycles, cars, motorcycles and buses across the Grønsund every summer. It can accommodate 98 passengers and 12 cars. The marina has facilities for sailors. At the IDA ferry landing in the harbour, the Udsigtstrappen offers views of the Grønsund and Bogø.

Old town with town hall, church and historic traces

Stubbekøbing’s old town hall stands at Torvet in the centre. It was the seat of the Municipality of Stubbekøbing and is now used as a cultural centre. A tour of the old town can begin at Torvet by the old church. The medieval town church was built from chalk blocks in basilica form, with a central nave and two aisles. On the north side of the nave is Sct. Annas kapel, regarded as one of Denmark’s finest Gothic buildings. Stubbekøbing Church is also part of the Kirkeruten.

The structure of the old town is easy to follow on foot: two parallel streets are connected by cross streets. At the end of Møllegade stood Stampen, a watermill at the outlet of the Fribrødre Å. Stampen Mill can now be seen from Orevej. Around the year 1000, Ledingshavn, a fjord harbour where Viking ships gathered, lay south of the old centre. The townscape therefore brings together medieval architectural forms, later harbour history and visible traces of earlier use.

Anlæg and cycle routes for active days

For a more relaxed active break, Anlæg offers a variety of landscapes. Paths lead between tall, old beech trees and open lawns. Anlæg contains two small lakes, one of which is heart-shaped. Anlæg offers views of the Grønsund. This makes this part of Stubbekøbing a concrete point of orientation for walks where nature and the town do not appear as separate experiences.

There are also specific options for cycling tours. The 30-kilometre cycle route “Fra købstad til fiskerleje” starts and ends at the harbour of Stubbekøbing. Its route is marked with symbols that you follow using a fish as your guide. In addition, the cycle route from Stubbekøbing to Rødbyhavn is signposted. The seasonal IDA ferry and the cycle routes each have different focuses: here, the connection across the Grønsund is the priority, while there, the focus is on following marked paths and a circular route starting and ending at the harbour.

Museum, art and festival

Danmarks Motorcykelmuseum displays more than 200 motorcycles in its exhibition, including 11 Danish models. The radio section provides insights into the electronic development of the 20th century and includes, among other things, an example of the Magnavox. KUNST-Doseringen is located in the historic fish factory at the harbour of Stubbekøbing. As an exhibition platform, it presents professional artists connected to the Storstrøm cultural region through exhibitions, events, workshops and artist talks.

The events calendar includes the Kun Forrykte Festival. It has taken place in Stubbekøbing since 2019 and is scheduled for 2027 in the town’s park on North Falster. The two-day event combines rock and folk music. Another small connection to the town’s history can be found on Havnegade: during a walk, you can discover lamp posts featuring motifs of the IDA ferry and the town’s motorcycles, as well as distinctive drain grilles. Stubbekøbing therefore offers several concrete points of reference for planning your trip – from harbour views, cycle routes and church architecture to museums, art and music.
