Nykøbing Falster – Culture, Art and Guldborgsund
Nykøbing Falster is located on Guldborgsund and combines a maritime waterfront setting with remarkable cultural and artistic experiences. When planning your trip, the main question is therefore whether you want to focus on the city by the water, historical insights, self-guided art walks or active activities. When searching for a hotel or other accommodation in Nykøbing Falster, these themes can provide an initial guide.
Waterfront location, harbour and paths through the city
At the Slotsbryggen waterfront promenade, you can walk along Guldborgsund. At the end of Strandboulevarden, there is a bathing jetty. The marina in Nykøbing Falster is just over 1 km north of the swing bridge and has 300 berths. The city is therefore not only a historic place, but also a location with a visible connection to the water.
It is also possible to arrive by train: From Nykøbing Falster, train connections run via Maribo to Nakskov and to Copenhagen. Nykøbing F. station is approximately 1 km, or around a 15-minute walk, from Pangea Park Falster. There, the petting zoo offers encounters with goats, donkeys and other friendly animals.
Historical sites and unusual museums
The Monastery Church was built of masonry bricks in the 15th century and handed over to the city as a parish church in 1532. It houses Queen Dowager Sophie’s 33-square-metre Mecklenburg family tree, which is considered the largest of its kind in Denmark. The church also has a carillon with 26 bells, which can be heard throughout the city.
For a varied cultural day, Nykøbing Falster offers several very different themes. Museum Obscurum presents the unique and secret cryptozoological collection of Cornelius S. C. Rödder, featuring finds from around the world. At Den Gamle Købmandshandel, you can experience commercial life in the 1950s. Frisørmuseet Nykøbing F. provides an introduction to the changes in salons, hairdressing products and work tools during the 20th century.
The Art Walk follows two circular, self-guided routes of 2.5 km and 4 km through public art experiences in Nykøbing Falster. One of the stops is the bear sculpture on Torvet. The different route lengths help you choose an art tour that suits the time available to you.
Water, cycling and events
At Guldborgsund Aqua Sport, you can go wakeboarding. You can also begin the fourth stage of the Østersøruten in Nykøbing F. Those who want to combine regional culture with a fixed event date can visit Nykøbing Falster Revyen for a traditional summer revue from June to August, as well as a winter revue in January.
The city can also be explored through its cuisine: SMAG Mad & Vin is a restaurant in Hollands Gaard in the heart of Nykøbing Falster. Other destinations in this selection are Næs, Hesnæs, Gedser, Idestrup, Gedesby, Nørre Alslev and Elkenøre.
