Frederikssund by Roskilde Fjord

Frederikssund is located by Roskilde Fjord and combines a maritime setting with a distinct cultural profile. Transport connections are also relevant when planning your trip: an S-train line connects the town with the capital, runs every 10 minutes and reaches Copenhagen Central Station in about 45 minutes. This frequency and approximate travel time provide a concrete time frame if you would like to combine your stay by the fjord with a visit to Copenhagen. The route can therefore also be taken into account when planning a day trip.

Kalvøen and the Viking World

Kalvøen was once an island in Roskilde Fjord and includes a park and an open-air stage. The Viking Play is performed there in summer; since 1952, the Frederikssund Viking Play has staged Viking performances every year on this open-air stage. With costumes and swords, the Viking Play presents exciting dramas based on Danish Viking sagas and myths. The combination of park and stage makes Kalvøen a place where the landscape and Viking culture can be experienced side by side.

To the south of Kalvøen lies Vikingebopladsen, at the entrance to the entire Viking area with the open-air stage and the Valhal longhouse. The site is an open-air museum that normally does not charge admission. Vikingebopladsen contains five pit houses: small houses partially built into the ground that served as workshops and, in some cases, temporary dwellings. Before the performances, visitors can also take part in guided tours of the Viking area on Kalvøen. Those who join such a tour explore the Viking area with a guide before the performance.

Art, Church and Cultural History

The Willumsen Museum has a collection of 8,000 works. It offers creative educational activities and opportunities for both children and adults. In this way, viewing the collection is combined with a hands-on activity that involves different age groups. From Tuesday, 8 September 2026, the museum should be open to all visitors.

Frederikssund Church has roots dating back to the 12th century. It contains a pulpit dating from 1606, and the church also hosts concerts and lectures. Its long history, the specific furnishing and the cultural events each highlight different aspects of the same place.

Kulturhuset Elværket provides a year-round setting for numerous events organised by its users and members, and it also presents exhibitions. The exhibitions complement the event programme with a visual dimension. As a further historical detail, the present-day Kronprins Frederiks Bro was opened to car traffic on 30 October 1935.

Open Space in Sillebro Ã…dal

Sillebro Ã…dal is located in the middle of Frederikssund and offers a wide range of opportunities for outdoor activities. Visitors are allowed to spend the night in the shelters at Sillebro Ã…dal; barbecues and campfires are also permitted. The permitted overnight stay can turn the outing into a longer visit if desired; barbecues and campfires are likewise among the possible uses.
