Between the Medieval Old Town and the Baltic Coast

Tallinn combines a maritime setting with an exceptionally well-preserved historic city centre. The Old Town is an exceptionally complete and well-preserved medieval northern European trading city on the Baltic coast.

The Old Town as a Historic Centre

The medieval urban structure of the Old Town can still be recognised in the building plots, streets and squares laid out in the 13th century. The fortifications also convey Tallinn’s former importance. Over extensive sections, they have been preserved in their original length and height; in places, they reach more than 15 metres. Several viewpoints within the Old Town offer views of red roofs and Tallinn’s skyline.

City History in Museums and Underground Passages

The Tallinn City Life Museum presents the history of Tallinn, its fortifications and its Hanseatic heritage. It is located on Vene Street in a historic merchant’s house. There, Tallinn’s history is told through the everyday lives of its residents, connecting the city’s development with specific lived experiences. The Bastion Underground Passages focus on a different aspect of history. They are defensive tunnels built in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Seaplane Harbour is also part of the historical perspective on Tallinn. It was built in 1917 on the initiative of the Russian Empire to become part of the Naval Fortress of Peter the Great. The site therefore adds a chapter of military and maritime urban history to the medieval Old Town.

Kadriorg and Historic Ways of Life

At the centre of Kadriorg is Estonia’s only Baroque palace and park ensemble. It was created 300 years ago by the Russian Tsar Peter the Great. Kadriorg thus offers a distinctly different view of Tallinn from the medieval streets. Visitors can go for a walk or ride a bicycle there and enrich their stay with the history of parks and architecture.

The Estonian Open Air Museum shows how families from different social classes lived from the 18th to the 20th century across 14 farmsteads. A visit combines historic buildings and social history with hands-on activities: visitors can buy handicrafts and go horse riding. At the Estonian Open Air Museum’s inn, they can also try traditional Estonian dishes. In this way, Tallinn offers not only representative urban history but also access to everyday culture and regional traditions.
