Charlottenhof: Bog Trail, Hiking Routes and Railway History
Accommodation in Charlottenhof
Charlottenhof (Aegviidu) can be explored through its bog landscape, hiking trails and railway history. The Sõõriksoo Nature Trail is located in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area. Its natural features include a bog landscape, drained bog woodland, a bog with old peat cuttings, and traces of animals and birds. The 700-metre boardwalk is designed for wheelchairs and strollers. The nature trail is right next to Aegviidu station and can be reached by train; the Aegviidu Visitor Centre is also nearby. The old peat cuttings point to the former extraction of peat from the bog.
Bog Trail and Longer Hike
One longer route is the 27-kilometre Järvi–Aegviidu hiking trail, which is accessible from the RMK Aegviidu Visitor Centre. The route includes three kilometres of boardwalks, as well as several campsites and fire pits. The details about Sõõriksoo and Järvi–Aegviidu describe different scales: one is the 700-metre boardwalk on the nature trail; the other is the total length of a hiking trail that includes additional boardwalk sections and campsites. This lets you distinguish a short boardwalk experience from a much longer hike, without treating the two lengths as comparable route distances.
Visitor Centre and Nature Activities
The RMK Aegviidu Visitor Centre is in the heart of Aegviidu, among the forests and lakes of Kõrvemaa. It provides information about recreational opportunities in the area and the RMK hiking trails that branch off here. Offerings include exhibitions, nature films and nature education programmes. If you would like to combine hiking with learning about nature, you can find both trail information and educational activities on nature topics here.
Cycling Routes and Other Activities
Two cycling routes can also be distinguished by their length and features. The Aegviidu–Nelijärve–Jäneda President’s Trail starts near Aegviidu station, is ten kilometres long and is marked with blue arrows and signposts. The paved Aegviidu–Nelijärve–Jäneda cycling route is twelve kilometres long. The stated lengths differ by two kilometres: the ten-kilometre route is marked with blue signs, while the twelve-kilometre cycling route is paved. If you are comparing routes based on specific features, length, signage and surface offer different points of reference. Another activity is Aegviidu Disc Golf Park, which has nine baskets and is suitable for beginners.
Railway History and Culture
Railway history is also part of the local character. Aegviidu locomotive depot was built in 1870 as part of the Aegviidu railway complex. Today, it houses a hiking and information centre where hikes can be booked. Its history and current use give the depot both a historical connection and a practical link to hiking. Aegviidu Aleksander Church was known as the Aegviidu Forest Chapel. The Aegviidu Chapel was consecrated on 6 December 1896. Railway history and a religious site with a specific consecration date thus offer distinct cultural points of interest.
