There are several specific reasons to choose Rae as a travel destination: the history of Rae mõis manor, traces of early settlement in Rae küla, the landscape around Rae raba, and historical links to transport and defence. These themes range from cultural history and horticulture to bogland and waterways. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether local history, the landscape or an active leisure option will shape your stay.

Rae mõis: manor history and horticulture

Rae mõis manor was first mentioned in written sources in 1390. It received its name after it passed into the possession of the Tallinn City Council. The origin of the name thus points to a specific event in the manor’s history. Horticulture offers another perspective: Jaan Jürgenson, who adopted the family name Raeda in 1938, established a selection garden and a nursery at Rae mõis. The selection garden is under nature protection. Together, the manor’s history and horticulture offer two distinct ways to explore this historic place.

Early traces and an active leisure option

Offering stones and burial mounds in Rae küla indicate that people had lived there for several thousand years. These traces offer a different perspective on time than the manor’s written mention in 1390: here, the focus is on a long history of human settlement; there, on a specific date in the documented history of the manor. Rae küla also has a specific sporting facility. As of 11 February 2026, it had an outdoor tennis court with an artificial-turf surface and artificial lighting. Check that it is currently available before making plans.

Bog, village boundary and waterway

Rae raba bog forms the northeastern boundary of Rae küla. Along the edge of the bog near the village runs the Pirita–Ülemiste Canal, which connects the Pirita River with the Vaskjala Reservoir and Lake Ülemiste. These are two distinct landscape features that help orient you: the bog marks the village boundary, while the canal links the named bodies of water. If you are interested in Rae primarily for its landscape and water engineering, this offers another specific point of interest alongside the historical themes.

Fortress railway and transport

The Rae positsiooni rooduvarjend, located in Rae vald, belongs to the III Defence Sector. A fortress railway connected the shelter with Tallinn. Its embankment is still visible beneath a straight section of Raeküla tee from Rae küla to the junction with Loopera tee; visible remains may change over time. The railway connection and the shelter’s membership in the Defence Sector answer different questions: one describes a historical link, the other the shelter’s military classification.

The Uuesalu – Rae küla – Jüri route was announced for bus line R20, starting on 2 September 2026. Check whether the line is currently in service before travelling.
