Sandhamn between Sand, Rock and Waterways

Sandhamn appeals to travelers looking for a manageable island with maritime heritage, beach paths and a harbor atmosphere. The island on which Sandhamn is located is three kilometers long and one kilometer wide. It consists predominantly of sand; rocky outcrops of the underlying bedrock are scattered across it. This gives the landscape a clear contrast between soft sandy areas and exposed rock.

Another prominent site is the Sandhamn Chapel. It was inaugurated in 1935, stands at the foot of the pilot lookout tower and is located in an area of national interest for cultural heritage conservation. The chapel itself is protected under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act. From there, there is a view from the highest point on Sandön. Visiting the chapel therefore combines with a direct view of the maritime landscape, without requiring culture and landscape to be experienced separately.

Beach, Views and Activities on the Water

If you would like to include a visit to the beach during your stay, Trouville is located on the southern side of Sandhamn Island. The long sandy beach has white sand. Trouville can be reached from Sandhamn harbor via a walk of approximately 20 minutes; the route is also suitable for strollers. Above the old shipyard, Kvarnberget offers a view of the sea and is suitable as a picnic spot.

There are also documented options for active days on the water. Sandhamnsguiderna rents easy-to-paddle sea kayaks for exploring the immediate surroundings. Guided sport-fishing trips are also offered, with the required equipment and functional sport-fishing boats. Sandhamn guest harbor has approximately 200 guest berths.

The Sandhamn Regatta has its own place in the maritime calendar: This three-day sailing event featuring classic yachts dates back to 1897. It is therefore part of the town’s established event and sailing history, without implying a current event date.

Getting There and Classifying the Location of Your Stay

Waxholmsbolaget operates a year-round boat connection to Sandhamn, including during periods of ice. In addition, the central main fairway to Stockholm passes Sandhamn and allows a draft of up to 11 meters. Both details establish the destination as a maritime point of interest, but do not replace checking current connections or schedules for the day.
