Fröjel: Hiking, Coast and Historical Traces

Fröjel is a destination for you if you want to combine historical traces, paths through nature and a bathing spot on the coast. What makes the area special is the connection between the past and the landscape: Below Fröjel Church are the remains of a Viking Age harbour and trading site, while hiking trails lead to Vallhagar and through Alstäde skog Nature Reserve. This range of experiences is complemented by Djupvik bathing spot in Eksta and Fröjel.

Historical traces around Fröjel

The fields below Fröjel Church contain the remains of a Viking Age harbour and trading site. This means that the focus here is not just on a single historic building, but on a landscape in which the maritime and economic past can be traced. Another focal point is Vallhagar: The remains there indicate settlement since the Iron Age, from around 200 BC.

The Fröjel local heritage association has prepared information material on more than 30 places to visit. Anyone wishing to structure their stay can use this information material as a guide.

Hiking trails with different focuses

There are several trail options for active days. The Hembygdsleden Fröjel–Klinte is approximately 8 km long. Its name also describes its connection between the two places, making it an independent option for anyone who wants to include a longer hike in their selection.

The Alstädeleden runs between Fröjel Church and Hajdes. It also passes Vallhagar and runs through Alstäde skog Nature Reserve. There are parking areas at the start of the Vallhagarleden and at the Vallhagar house foundation area. This makes it possible to consider historical traces and practical route orientation together when exploring Vallhagar, without equating the different offerings.

Forest, bird habitat and coast

Alstäde skog comprises old coniferous forest with many pine trees that are more than 200 years old. The Alstädeleden runs through this landscape, complementing the historical aspect of the route with a distinctly nature-oriented experience. Gannarveviken is considered one of Gotland's better bird habitats. For your selection, this means another thematic focus: In addition to hiking trails and settlement history, observing the landscape and its birdlife is also one of the documented points of interest in Fröjel.

If the sea and a beach stay are your main priorities, Djupvik bathing spot in Eksta and Fröjel is a separate point of interest. There you will find a more than 200-metre-long, relatively shallow sandy beach with sections of stones and gravel. Its exact character therefore differs from that of a purely sandy beach and should be taken into account when choosing a particular stretch of coast.
