Väskinde

Väskinde between a nature trail, art and church history

If you would like to combine nature, coastal views and historical traces on your trip, Väskinde offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest. In the Brucebo nature reserve, the landscape and views take centre stage; Brucebo itself also leads into the history of an artists’ home and museum. Väskinde kyrka adds archaeological and runic evidence to this focus. This makes it possible to explore the area through specific nature and cultural experiences, without a single theme having to define the entire trip.

Brucebo: Nature between coastal meadows and cliff edge

The Brucebo nature reserve comprises bird-rich coastal meadows, wetlands with orchids and a cliff edge marked by caves. These landscape elements give the area a varied character: open meadows close to the shore are followed by damp areas with distinctive plant life, while the cliff edge provides the geological and coastal accent.

A nature trail approximately 2 kilometres long runs through the nature reserve. This provides a documented walking route for visitors, directly linking the protected area with the experience of nature. From the cliff ridge, the view extends across large parts of the reserve, the coast to the north and the sea to the west. The viewpoint therefore complements the trail with a spatial perspective on the landscape and its coastal setting.

Brucebo Artists’ Home and Museum

Construction of Brucebo began in 1900 with Carolina Benedicks Bruce (1856–1935) from Stockholm and her Canadian husband William Blair Bruce (1859–1906). The couple worked at Brucebo and created a large number of paintings and sculptures there, which can still be viewed today. The site therefore represents not only a historic building, but also a preserved body of artistic work that remains associated with Brucebo.

Konstnärshemmet Brucebo is a museum where guided tours can be booked year-round. For your travel planning, this creates a clear distinction within the cultural offerings: you can view Brucebo as a museum and artists’ home, while the nature trail and cliff ridge provide the landscape perspective within the same area of interest. The guided tours also clearly identify the visit as an explicitly guided format.

Väskinde kyrka: medieval traces and runic script

Väskinde kyrka also offers several specific historical points of reference. Remains of an older apse church were discovered in the walls; it was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. The reference to the date is deliberately qualified as a probability. It points to an earlier construction phase that can be archaeologically identified in the present church.

In 1953, a Futhark inscription designated G 258 was discovered in the plaster surface of the inclusorium. Futhark refers here to the runic script used. In addition, a picture stone documented at Väskinde kyrka remains in situ and is used as a reused threshold. These details make the church interesting for visitors who are looking for preserved materials and specific traces of the past rather than merely a general historical classification.
