Fårösund – Fortress, Coast and Nature

Fårösund combines maritime orientation with history and nature-based experiences. The coastal areas offer nature experiences, views and relaxation. At the same time, the town has a direct connection to the island world: the Fårösundsleden ferry route runs between Fårösund in northern Gotland and Broa on Fårö. Those looking for a combination of coast, cultural history and paths through the landscape will find several clearly distinct points of interest here.

Fortress and Ferry Connection

A defining historical feature is Fårösund Fortress, a well-preserved fortification built in 1885–1886. It consists of three permanent batteries: the central battery, Battery I, the northern battery, Battery II, and the southern battery, Battery III. The complex houses modern hotel, restaurant and conference operations. In Fårösund, traces of military history and present-day use therefore exist side by side as distinct aspects of the same place.

For orientation between Gotland and Fårö, the Fårösundsleden ferry route is the central documented connection. In addition, excursion boats travel from Fårösund to Gotska Sandön three times a week in summer. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Several species of seabirds and, occasionally, white-tailed eagles can be observed on Gotska Sandön; at Säludden, seals can be observed at close range.

Bungemuseet and Regional History

Bungemuseet focuses on the rural and economic life of Gotland. Authentic houses and buildings can be visited there, illustrating rural life on Gotland. The museum presents early industry through, among other things, lime kilns, wind-powered sawmills and watermills, and conveys history from the Bronze Age to the 20th century.

A culinary aspect is also part of a museum visit: the Bungemuseet café serves coffee and Gotland saffron pancakes in a historic setting. Bunge airfield is located near Fårösund and directly next to the open-air museum Bungemuseet. Its runways bear witness to the military history of the area around Fårösund, thereby complementing the town’s historical themes with another concrete site.

Paths, Forest and Coastal Landscape

For shorter routes within Fårösund, Hälsans Stig is a clearly described option: the circular trail is 5 kilometres long and runs through Kustparken, along Strandvägen, past Fårösund School and the sports field. West of Fårösund there is also a larger forest area with fitness and exercise trails.

Another nearby natural destination is Bungenäs Nature Reserve, located 3 kilometres from Fårösund. A 700-metre-long path leads from the car park to the beach. West of Fårösund lies Bästeträsk, Gotland’s largest lake, surrounded by forests, marshes, alvar land and pebble beaches of high natural value. In the area around Bästeträsk, visitors can cycle, hike or paddle during the summer half of the year. These landscapes differ markedly from the coastal areas and expand the options to include paths, forest, lake and beach.

Other Activities

Fårösund also offers a dedicated option for active days. Gotlands Trampolinpark has a tricking zone and an air-cushion area for practising jumps and somersaults. The trampoline park thus complements the historical, coastal and nature-oriented themes with an independent activity.
