Skårup Fyn between Coast, Trails and Village History
Between Moraine Landscape and Coast
Skårup Fyn appeals to travellers who want to combine gently rolling landscapes, the coast and historic local features in one trip. Skårup lies in a gently rolling, fertile moraine landscape. Skårupøre Beach is the main maritime attraction: it stretches for just under 3 km from Skårupøre Camping to Åbyskov. There are car parks and bathing jetties at both ends; at the western end, there is also a kiosk and toilets. Skårupøre Camping is located on a headland on the Langelandsbælt in south-eastern Funen. This means you can distinguish between the hilly inland area around Skårup and the beachside section near Skårupøre when choosing where to stay. This allows you to plan your trip around different interests: coastal stays, trails through the landscape or historical details.
Skårup Seminary and Skårup Church
The Skårup Seminary cultural environment comprises the former Skårup Seminary, the adjoining parts of the village centre and Skårup School. Skårup Seminary was founded by royal rescript dated 3 June 1803. The Skårup Seminary building is listed. Skårup Church contains two Romanesque baptismal fonts, one of which was left unfinished. The northern transept of Skårup Church was built in 1754 and was originally called “Skårupørekirken”; it was reserved for parishioners living in Skårupøre. This gives visitors interested in culture several historical points of interest: the former seminary, the church with its baptismal fonts and the distinctive transept.
Walking on Old Routes
When walking around Skårup, different route connections come together. Most of the suggested route follows the Øhavsstien; the suggested walk leaves this trail and leads uphill towards Skårup. The shelter in Bjergager lies between Skårup and the Øhavsstien, north of Skårupøre. The shelter on Bjergagervej has a fire pit as well as pans and sticks for pancakes or twist bread. Church paths are registered in Skårup. Church and farm tracks are very old routes on which the public may walk around the clock. For planning purposes, longer trail sections, an uphill section and old local route connections are therefore clearly distinct from one another.
Cycling Tour and Viticulture
The South Funen Fruit and Orchard Route follows a different line through the landscape by bicycle. It is a cycling tour that leads inland towards Skårup and then continues south towards the coast at Åbyskov. Viticulture is also part of the character of Skårupøre: At Skårupøre Vingaard, wine is grown organically and biodynamically. Together with the beach, the trails and the historic buildings, this creates a travel focus that places nature, activity, coast and local culture side by side.
