A section of the Øhavsstien hiking trail, approximately 4 km long, follows the river through Vejstrup Ådal. Stage 8 of the Øhavsstien runs from Svendborg through Christiansminde, Webers område, Gammel Hestehave and the agricultural land along Vejstrup Ådal to the town of Vejstrup. When planning an excursion, the approximately 4 km section along the river can be planned as a separate trail section. This helps you distinguish conceptually between a shorter nature outing and a longer hike, and align your plans with the desired trail length.

Glacial landscape history

Vejstrup Ådal may originally have formed as a tunnel valley beneath the ice 18,000 to 17,000 years ago, created by meltwater flowing westwards from the part of the Bælthav ice stream known as the “Storebæltsgletsjeren”.

Church, Vejstrupgård and Watermill

The architectural history includes Vejstrup Valgmenighedskirke, which was built in 1874–1875 from fieldstones collected in the fields around Vejstrup. Vejstrupgård is a listed building. Together with its south-facing landscaped garden, Vejstrupgård forms a rarely preserved ensemble. The grounds include carp ponds, a stone mound and woodland; the land slopes down to Vejstrup Watermill at the southern edge of the garden. The ensemble contains all the elements of a traditional rural manor.

The present-day Vejstrup Watermill was built by Vejstrupgård in 1838. From the Øhavsstien, there is a view of Vejstrup Watermill and its millpond. An excursion in Vejstrup can focus on the church, the Vejstrupgård ensemble or the view of the Watermill. Access from the car park at Lillemølle Bro and getting off at the Vejstrup Ådal Shelter bus stop represent two different travel options.
