Gadstrup: Hiking, Ramsø Mose and History

Hiking between Gadstrup and Ramsø Mose

The Gudernes Stræde hiking route passes through Gadstrup railway station. The station thereby connects the town with the course of the hiking route. In Ramsødalen, a path leads from Gadstrup to the birdwatching tower at Ramsømagle Sø. The path connects the town with a destination in the landscape and makes the lake a fixed point of reference for an excursion.

Ramsømagle Sø is located in Natura 2000 site No. 151, Ramsø Mose. Ramsø Mose covers approximately 216 hectares and stretches 5 km from Gadstrup in the east to Kumlehuse in the west. The approximate area and east-west extent describe the landscape, not the path to the birdwatching tower. Those who wish to combine hiking and nature observation will find two spatial scales here: the path through Ramsødalen, with the birdwatching tower as its destination, and the larger protected area between Gadstrup and Kumlehuse. When planning your excursion, you can focus on the specific path to the birdwatching tower or on the larger landscape.

Gadstrup in the Regional Railway Network

Gadstrup railway station is part of the Lille Syd railway line, which runs from Roskilde via Køge to Næstved. Gadstrup is thus situated along a regional route that connects the town with several cities. The regional railway route places a different emphasis from the paths around Ramsømagle Sø: Roskilde, Køge and Næstved mark different points along the same line. The route helps place Gadstrup between the regional destinations.

Romanesque Church and Historic Surroundings

Gadstrup Church was built during the Romanesque period, dated to the years 1050 to 1275. The church preserves 33 surviving pew ends from the 1660s. Thus, the Romanesque building phase and the surviving details from the 1660s are found within the same church interior.

The chronological layering helps with the historical perspective: the church’s construction period and the dating of the pew ends do not belong to the same era.

The ancient site Øm Passage Grave is located in the immediate vicinity of Gadstrup. St. Catherine's Priory in Roskilde is also located nearby. The Næbbeslot ruin is in the area around Gadstrup, while Vallø Castle lies in the wider regional area.
