Nyrup – Nyrup Bay, bathing jetty and Stone Age burial chambers

Nyrup can be explored from two perspectives: via Nyrup Bay and via Stone Age burial monuments such as Birkehøj and Skingshøj. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide early on whether water and landscape or cultural history should be the focus of your trip.

Stone Age burial monuments

Birkehøj Passage Graves near Nyrup contain Zealand’s longest burial chamber. The chamber is 11 m long, 2 m wide and 2 m high. Visitors can enter the burial chamber through the stone-built passage. Inside, there is an illuminated display case containing a stone model of the passage grave construction. From the top of Birkehøj, there is a panorama of the northern part of Odsherred.

Skingshøj also takes you back to the Stone Age. Skingshøj is a Stone Age dolmen or passage grave on the boundary of Nyrup and has been protected since before 1937. The excavated chamber is approximately 2 m long, up to 1.75 m wide and 1.40 m high. In Nyrup, you can therefore encounter two differently proportioned examples of prehistoric funerary architecture.

Birkehøj is visible from Oddenvejen and is considered easily accessible. After turning from Oddenvej onto Troldhøjvej, there are signs and a small roadside car park at Birkehøj. This makes it easier to find your way without setting a specific duration for the visit.

Nyrup Bay and protected landscape

Højby Sørende is a protected public watercourse that flows into Nyrup Bay. The protected property at Nyrup Bay remains free from cultivation and planting, except for sufficient planting to provide wind protection. The landscape therefore combines a watercourse, open areas and an explicitly protected character.

The protected area at Nyrup Bay can be viewed from Klint Strandvej in Nyrup. On the ten-Tønder property at Nyrup Bay, you can swim or otherwise enjoy the grounds. For planning your day, this offers different ways to spend time by the water: observing, swimming or quietly relaxing in the landscape.

Seasonal bathing jetty and crab fishing

Crab fishing is the only permitted form of fishing from Nyrup Bathing Jetty. Crab fishing rods, nets, buckets and bait can be bought from the grocer in Nyrup. Nyrup Bathing Jetty is installed in April and dismantled again in September or October. Because of severe storms and high waves, Nyrup Bay Bathing Jetty is not left in the water during winter. Anyone planning to experience this side of Nyrup should therefore take the seasonal operation of the jetty into account when planning their trip and distinguish time spent on the jetty during the day from viewing the area around the bay.
