Tølløse: Forest, Common and Railway History

In Tølløse, you encounter both natural and local history. Tølløse Skov, also known as Nederskoven, Tølløse Fælled, Tølløsegård and the railway buildings offer different ways of exploring them.

Forest between Deciduous and Coniferous Trees

Tølløse Skov lies in a manor landscape. Old and new deciduous woodland meet coniferous forest there. Part of the forest is a school forest, where visitors can learn about the individual trees. In this way, the forest has not only a landscape-related aspect but also an area devoted to the different tree species. Tølløse Skov also has a fenced dog exercise area where dogs may run without a leash. The school forest and dog exercise area represent two different uses of the same forest area: here, the focus is on learning about the trees, while there it is on allowing dogs to run freely.

Common and Cycle Route

Tølløse Fælled includes areas deliberately left to develop naturally, with long common grass, a wetland and wildflowers. These landscape elements create better conditions for bees, butterflies and other wildlife. The common therefore presents an open landscape in which different habitats lie alongside one another. The 280-kilometre-long Istidsruten cycle route passes Tølløse Fælled along the cycle path beside Kvarmløsevej. The route length refers to the entire Istidsruten, while the section by the common runs along Kvarmløsevej. Thus, on this section, the far-reaching cycle route connects with a landscape of grassland, wetland and wildflowers.

Manor and Renaissance Building

Tølløsegård is a medieval manor in the settlement of Gammel Tølløse. Of the original moat system that surrounded the estate, the southern moat, approximately 150 metres long, remains at Tølløsegård. In 1575, the then owner, Peder Oxe, commissioned a new main building at Tølløsegaard. The building consisted of two connected houses with their own gables and roofs in the Dutch Renaissance style. The medieval estate and the building erected in the 16th century thus combine two historical periods. The surviving moat complements the building with a visible element of its former fortification and enclosure.

Railway Town and Festival

Tølløse developed as a railway town around a station established in 1874 on the Nordvestbanen. Nordvestbanen is the Kalundborg–Holbæk–Roskilde railway line. Tølløse’s railway heritage also includes a station building erected in 1875. The station and building point to Tølløse’s early development in connection with the railway. Tølløse has its own music festival, Tølløse Festival. It offers music, entertainment and activities for the whole family and is based on local volunteers. In this way, a cultural event rooted in local life and held annually complements the railway history and historic buildings.
