Holbæk Municipality: The Fjord Path, Nature and History

Holbæk Municipality has two stages of the Fjord Path, both of which begin in Holbæk: Dragerup–Mårsø and Dragerup–Ågerup. The immediate urban area of Holbæk Municipality includes Næsby, Løserup, Tuse, Holbæk, Avdebo, Tølløse, Bukkerup, Bognæs, Kisserup and Jyderup.

Trails and landscape

Holbæk Fælled is a public natural area of approximately 150 hectares with open grassland, scattered woodland and ponds, as well as diverse flora and fauna. Holbæk Fælled offers the opportunity to play disc golf; the area also provides space for cycling.

The Fjord Path stage from Dragerup to Mårsø passes through the town of Holbæk, along the waterfront promenade and past Holbæk's old harbour. The Fjord Path is marked as Route 40 with blue cycle route signs. In some places, it splits into a walking trail and a cycle path, while the walking routes are signposted separately. From Holbæk Municipality, the Fjord Path continues into the municipalities of Lejre and Roskilde.

The hiking trails of Kirke Eskilstrup comprise 36.7 km of marked routes with posts and signs.

Nature and geology

The area around Brorfelde Observatory is a unique glacial landscape and has been designated a national geological area of interest. Brorfelde Bakker has been designated a national geological area of interest by the Ministry of the Environment; its geological values are protected, maintained and communicated.

The recreational area around Brorfelde Observatory is open to the public. Guided tours of the observatory include the workshop, the domes and Discovery, Denmark's largest telescope. The path to the domes, as well as the paths to the playground and shelters at the observatory, are accessible by wheelchair and with a pram.

Culture and history

Holbæk Museum is located in the centre of Holbæk and comprises a collection of twelve buildings that form the heart of the old town. Eleven of the twelve authentic buildings still stand at their original locations, with some dating back to around 1660. The museum's exhibitions address the significance of the West Indies for western Zealand, the development of Holbæk and Knabstrup ceramics.

Just outside Holbæk, the Nyvang experience centre presents the history of Denmark from 1930 to 1959. History is brought to life there: the complex includes, among other things, a consumer cooperative, a dairy, a mission church, a village school, a smallholder's farm, workshops and shops.

Strandparken features winding walking paths, old buildings, statues and small garden rooms. The grounds are Holbæk Municipality's only true historic park and were designed in the Romantic garden style that came to Denmark from England at the end of the 19th century.

Holbæk Municipality has a professional theatre and several active amateur theatres. Various performances are offered throughout the entire theatre season. Holbæk Teater is a central venue for Sjællands Teater. Kystliv Holbæk focuses its work on the local traditional coastal culture.

Leisure and swimming

The swimming centre at Holbæk Sportsby has several pools, including an Olympic 50-metre pool, a family pool and a warm-water pool. The swimming centre is open to the public and offers swimming, aqua training, sauna use, water games and relaxation.

There is a freely accessible skate park at Markedspladsen in the centre of Holbæk. Isrosen is a seasonal ice rink in Holbæk where visitors can go ice skating and try ice hockey.

Traditional cuisine

Madam Blaa at the Nyvang experience centre serves a traditional lunch with traditional dishes, cold drinks and cakes. Nyvang's bakery and pastry shop makes cakes baked with butter from its own dairy.
