Faxe Municipality: Limestone Quarry, Coastal Paths and Gisselfeld

At Faxe Limestone Quarry, you can borrow a hammer and chisel from KALK and explore the quarry independently. During guided fossil excursions, participants search the quarry for corals, snails, shark teeth and shells; the excursions cover approximately 2 to 2.5 kilometres. A ticket for a fossil excursion includes admission to the KALK Geological Museum. KALK focuses on natural history, geology and the cultural history of limestone. The exhibition “Denmark’s Fossil Coral Reefs” explains the 63-million-year-old coral reef that formed the limestone beneath Faxe. Faxe Limestone Quarry is still active and offers insight into its operations.

Nature

A visit to the Forest Tower includes a 3.2-kilometre elevated walkway through the forest. The viewing platform is 140 metres above sea level and offers views across forests and fields, and in clear weather as far as Copenhagen and Malmö. The Forest Tower is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. In Camp Adventure’s climbing park, a 500-metre zip line runs through the forest. Faxe Municipality provides access to a varied landscape with forests, sea, lakes and beaches.

The approximately 40-hectare Gisselfeld Park consists half of carp ponds. The park at Gisselfeld Kloster is open to the public during the season for an admission fee. Svenskekløften, a named meltwater ravine, lies in the forests of Gisselfeld.

Paths and experiences

Faxe Limestone Quarry is publicly accessible from the path network at the hostel; there are also several access points near the Geomuseum leading to the edge of the quarry and to plateaus along the quarry wall. A picnic area with tables, benches and a fire pit is located on the edge of the quarry. Sjællandsleden, a long-distance hiking trail close to the coast, is one of the marked routes in Faxe Municipality. Near Haslev, the route information also identifies smaller heart trails.

The Faxe Ladeplads–Strandegård Dyrehave hiking route branches off from Sjællandsleden and leads from Faxe Ladeplads through the landscape of Zealand to Faxe and Faxe Limestone Quarry. In the private forests of Gisselfeld, cycling is permitted on paved paths but not on the forest floor. Faxe Municipality’s outdoor portal provides overviews of beaches, cycling and hiking routes, as well as outdoor accommodation options.

Culture and history

Kulturmuseum Øst presents exhibitions in its museum building in Faxe that are based on local history and place it in a broader context. Gisselfeld Kloster is one of Denmark’s oldest and best-preserved Renaissance castles. Peder Oxe founded Gisselfeld Kloster in its present form and had the castle built between 1547 and 1575. Parts of the main building are open to the public as part of guided tours.

Faxe Ladeplads Miniby & Park depicts Faxe Ladeplads as it was around 1900, at a scale of 1:10. Troldhøje comprises burial mounds covered with beech and oak trees, as well as a Neolithic long dolmen in Roholte near Strandegårds Dyrehave. Hylleholt Church in Faxe Ladeplads combines historic architecture with modern church art and has a distinctive spire.
