Krąg appeals to a range of travel interests: castle and church history on the one hand, and trails by Jezioro Zamkowe and in nature on the other. Podewils Castle, its park, and the Church of the Annunciation offer tangible historical points of interest in the town’s history. Marked riding and touring routes complement this cultural focus with opportunities to explore the surroundings along designated routes.

Podewils Castle and its architectural history

Podewils Castle was built by the Podewils family in the early 15th century as a former knight’s residence. In 1580, it was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The castle acquired its final appearance at the end of the 19th century. These three stages mark the early knight’s residence, its reconstruction, and the building’s later development.

Before the war, the castle was known as the “Flower Castle” because of its beautiful flower gardens. The nickname is part of its history at the time and refers to the gardens for which it was known. The 16th-century chapel in the castle park also contributes to the town’s historic character; its Baroque furnishings have been preserved.

Park and Jezioro Zamkowe

The castle is surrounded by a 2.6-hectare historic park. The park extends to the road and the shore of Jezioro Zamkowe, which lies north of the castle and is almost circular. There is a noticeable amount of pedestrian activity around the lake in Krąg. The park, castle, and lake thus form a distinct focus alongside the church’s historic interiors and furnishings.

Renaissance furnishings and burial chapel

The single-nave, brick Church of the Annunciation was built in 1580 by the owners of the nearby castle in the Baroque-Renaissance style. The older section retains rich Renaissance furnishings, including an altar, pulpit, and baptismal font, as well as a patron’s gallery. Visitors interested in historic church interiors and their furnishings will find a different way to explore Krąg’s history here than at the castle.

A burial chapel was added to the east side of the church in 1700. It contains the original, preserved Baroque sarcophagi of the founders Heinrich von Podewils, who died in 1696, and Adam von Podewils, who died in 1697. The two are distinct in their craftsmanship: Heinrich’s sarcophagus is made of brass; Adam’s is made of marble and decorated with sculptures. Together with the altar, pulpit, baptismal font, and patron’s gallery, these details make the different historic styles of furnishings in Krąg tangible.

Riding trails and tourist routes

The approximately 113-kilometer-long Rittmeister Marek Roszczynialski riding trail passes through Krąg. It connects Biały Bór, Drzewiany, Krąg, Polanów, Staniewice, and Jarosławiec. A marked riding trail also runs in the vicinity of Krąg and Komorowo.

Another way to find your bearings is a marked tourist route connecting Wielin, Buszyno, Krąg, and Borkowo in the municipality of Malechowo. Well-maintained nature trails begin just behind the buildings of the Podewils Castle Hotel and lead to a second, entirely natural forest lake. When planning your trip, you can choose between historic buildings, the lake and park surroundings, and different types of routes.
