Nawodna on the Rurzyca
Nawodna lies on the Rurzyca River and combines a distinctive landscape with a unique historic village layout. Historic Village Centre and Church
Nawodna’s historic settlement is laid out as an oval village. The church stands in the middle, on a central, spindle-shaped square. This arrangement offers a specific way to explore the village’s history: the layout of the village is as much a part of Nawodna’s character as its individual historic buildings. Those interested in historic settlement patterns can therefore look not only at a building, but also at the relationship between the church and the central square.
The parish Church of the Holy Cross is a Gothic building dating from the Late Middle Ages. Its tower dates from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. After a fire in 1964, the church was rebuilt in 1966. These details cover different periods in its history: the medieval building, the period when the tower was built, and the rebuilding after the fire. At the churchyard, a gate and a stone enclosure dating from the 14th or 15th century are among the oldest surviving features. This extends the historic perspective beyond the church to include the churchyard enclosure as well.
Another building with its own function is the Old Lutheran Chapel. It was built between 1816 and 1825 and serves as a funeral chapel. Along with the Church of the Holy Cross, it adds to the picture of Nawodna’s historic buildings, although the two buildings do not serve the same purpose.
