For planning a trip to Janowo and the Municipality of Susz, natural landscapes and historic architecture sit side by side. The 2024 municipal diagnosis for Gmina Susz lists a 6.5-kilometre municipal road between Janowo, Bornice and Lubnowy Wielkie. While the natural features relate to the municipality as a whole, historic buildings and sites are associated with places such as Bałoszyce, Babięta Wielkie, Nipkowo, Januszewo and Lubnowy Małe. This makes it possible to consider the landscape and architectural history as two distinct travel interests.

Nature and Landscapes of the Municipality of Susz

The Municipality of Susz lies in the Pojezierze Iławskie, characterised by extensive dense forests and numerous lakes rich in fish. The municipality’s territory is also within the Pojezierze Iławskie Landscape Park and, therefore, the European Natura 2000 ecological network. The Jezioro Gaudy and Jezioro Czerwica nature reserves are located in the municipality; the area along the Liwa is designated as a protected landscape area. The lakes and the Liwa add specific named landscapes to the broader forest-and-lake character of the Pojezierze Iławskie.

The municipality is home to nesting white-tailed eagles, ospreys, lesser spotted eagles, black kites, red kites and black storks. In addition to the birds, there are rare and endangered plants and numerous animal species, many of which are protected.

Historic Sites and Architecture

Bałoszyce brings together the architectural history of manor estates and religious buildings. The village is home to a Baroque palace dating from the 17th century, later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style by Karl Otto Magnus von Brünneck to a design by architect Luis Runge. The building is surrounded by an extensive park. The Baroque origins, Neo-Gothic remodelling and park offer different clues for understanding the architecture of the site: the change of style concerns the palace, while the park complements the ensemble in its setting. The restored palace in Bałoszyce is described as a hotel and restaurant offering services for biological regeneration and a horse-breeding facility. Check its current use before visiting.

The Church of the Holy Family is also in Bałoszyce and dates from the 17th century. This places a palace, later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style, and a church from the same period in the same village.

In Babięta Wielkie and Nipkowo, the respective manor houses are considered historically attractive sites. The palace ruins in Januszewo are also considered a historically attractive site. This places two manor houses alongside a palace ruin as different forms of estate architecture.

In the vicinity of Janowo, a manor-house park and a roadside cross in Lubnowy Małe were entered in the register of monuments on 27 September 2017 under the reference Z-69/2017. The park and roadside cross complement the larger manor estates with two different protected elements of the local landscape. The date refers to their entry in the register of monuments, not to the year the park or roadside cross was built.
