Iława is located on Lake Jeziorak, in the Polish Warmian–Masurian Voivodeship, and is the seat of Iława County. The lake shapes the classification of the town as much as the surrounding landscape.

Location and Bodies of Water

IÅ‚awa is situated on Lake Jeziorak and in the Green Lungs of Poland area. The IÅ‚awa Lake District Landscape Park borders the town to the west and north.

The area around IÅ‚awa is associated with sailing, mushroom gathering, hiking and cycling tours. There is a beach location at Prawdziwka Beach on Chodkiewicza Street; during an event held in a swimming format, a 100-metre course was used there.

Townscape and History

The former Kaiserstrasse, now Niepodległości Street, remains Iława’s main street and runs alongside the town park. Restaurants and pubs are located by the park.

Opposite the town park on Niepodległości Street stand Baroque sculptures from the 18th century: Jupiter, Juno, Hercules and Medusa.

Iława’s origins are traced back to 1305. At that time, a new settlement was founded on a peninsula of Lake Jeziorak and granted town rights; a municipal charter followed in 1317.
