Around Mörkhult, you’ll find fishing waters and a draisine route; the wider municipal and regional area also offers longer cycling and hiking trails, as well as churches, glassmaking culture and historical sites. The specific activities vary considerably, from a simple draisine route to fishing spots at two lakes and regional cycling routes of 150 and 199 kilometres.

Draisine rides, cycling and hiking

Near Mörkhult, the draisine route between Ambjörnarp and Sjötofta runs along Lake Holmåkrasjön. It follows the old Landeryd–Falköping railway line, and the one-way route is 7 km long. Along the route, four kilometres to the south, there is a rest area by Lake Holmåkrasjön with barbecue and swimming facilities.

The regional routes offer a different scale for cycling tours. The Sjuhäradsrundan is 150 km long, passes through Borås, Ulricehamn, Svenljunga and Tranemo, and runs mostly along an old railway track. The Ätradalsleden connects Falköping and Falkenberg over 199 km; 95 km of it runs entirely along car-free railway tracks. This gives you two cycling routes to choose from, with different overall lengths and proportions of railway track.

Hiking is also part of what Tranemo municipality has to offer. The Jälmåleden is 35 km long and passes through scenic surroundings. Hofsnäs nature trails are also among the municipality’s hiking options. Closer to Mörkhult is the Mörke-Malen runt trail, whose red markers are described as easy to follow.

Lakes and fishing opportunities

Tranemo municipality is characterised by numerous lakes and flowing waters, which are also used for fishing. The lakes belong to different fisheries management areas; visitors need to buy a fishing permit to fish there. The details may vary from one body of water to another. Near Mörkhult, Store mosse mfl is also classified as a Class 2 wetland in Tranemo’s nature value inventory.

The Visen & Opperhalens FVO fisheries management area near Mörkhult includes Lakes Visen and Opperhalen. At Lake Visen, good fishing opportunities can be found at the strait and along the rocky shore opposite the bathing area. There are submerged fish shelters in Lake Opperhalen; anglers who find them can catch perch there. The spots described therefore differ: at Lake Visen, specific sections of shore are mentioned, while at Lake Opperhalen, the shelters are in the lake.

Another fishing option in Tranemo municipality is Kroksjöns fiskecamp, which offers put-and-take fishing for rainbow trout. Water is also central to the Ambjörnarps Vattenskidklubb: founded in 1973, the club uses Lake Skogsjön in Ambjörnarp for water skiing.

Churches, glass and regional history

Ambjörnarps kyrka, a wooden church in the Neoclassical style, stands near Mörkhult. It was built in the 1840s, and its exterior has been well preserved since it was constructed. At Mossebo kyrka in Tranemo municipality, the focus shifts to other historical details: the church was completed in 1773, and its interior depicts biblical stories. It also houses a preserved chandelier from the Limmared glassworks, made in 1855.

In Limmared, Glasets Hus brings together a glass museum, an art gallery and a shop. Visitors can see exhibitions and try glassblowing for themselves. The different areas combine a museum visit, art and hands-on experience of glassmaking.

Another link to regional history can be found at Lindåsen in Ambjörnarp. A local history published in 2008 refers to a stone there as “Jättens likkista” (“the giant’s coffin”); according to legend, that is how it got its name. The stone is about 275 cm long and approximately 60 cm wide.

In the wider landscape, the region around Svenljunga and Tranemo lies in the borderlands with Småland and Halland. It is characterised by hundreds of lakes, long rivers and deep forests. The Kind area is also associated with a former border with Denmark and medieval cultural heritage around Torpa Stenhus. These regional connections add another landscape and historical perspective to the specific trails, waters and cultural sites around Mörkhult.
