Stigen, in the Swedish municipality of Färgelanda, has a remarkably clear industrial history: the town developed around a large wool mill that began operating in 1874. If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation for your stay, you can combine this historical focus with trails and a municipal swimming area. Which of these options suits your travel day depends on current conditions and the location of the specific offering.

Stigen at a glance

  • The large wool mill began operating in 1874 and shaped the town’s origins.
  • West of Stigen, there were sawmills, grain mills and fulling mills at the Lillån waterfalls as early as the 17th century.
  • The lower western power station in Stigen was built in 1913.
  • Stigen Manor dates back to the 1820s; the municipality traditionally celebrates National Day there on 6 June.
  • The municipality lists Stigen as an outdoor swimming area.

How did the town develop?

The textile industry played a central role in Stigen. According to the municipal account, it is the only town in Dalsland whose development was so strongly shaped by this economic sector. The large wool mill’s start of operations in 1874 is therefore more than just a date: it explains why industrial history takes centre stage when describing the town. This statement concerns Stigen’s origins, not the current operation of the old mill.

Water power was used in the surrounding area described here much earlier. As early as the 17th century, various mills stood at the Lillån waterfalls west of Stigen: sawmills, grain mills and fulling mills. The lower western power station was added in 1913. Visitors interested in technology and local history can distinguish these three periods of use without assuming that the historical records mean a site is open to visitors today. Before visiting, check which places are actually open to the public.

Plan hiking and swimming

One described hiking trail can be reached from Route 173 via Spinnarevägen in Stigen; a car park is mentioned about 300 metres after the turn-off. The area around Brötegårdssjön is described as having wide, easy-to-walk trails that are also suitable for pushchairs and young children. This specific information about the trails is more useful than a blanket promise that every trail around Stigen is easy. If you are travelling with a pushchair, check the planned route and current conditions along the entire trail.

Stigen is included in the list of municipal outdoor swimming areas for those planning time by the water. The listing names the location but does not provide current water quality, facilities or opening hours. If swimming is a key part of your trip, check the current condition of the swimming area. The easy-to-walk trails around Brötegårdssjön and the swimming-area listing answer different questions: one concerns getting around, the other a possible activity by the water.

The manor and choosing accommodation

Stigen Manor dates back to the 1820s. The municipality of Färgelanda traditionally holds its National Day celebration there on 6 June. The manor can also be hired for various events; this does not mean it operates as a regular museum or offers rooms that can be booked by anyone. For your stay, the date of a possible event and the location of your accommodation are separate considerations.

Compare a hotel, holiday home or holiday apartment based on current listings: location, price, facilities and availability may vary. The town’s history gives you a reason to visit, while the swimming area and trails offer further options. However, this does not automatically make any one accommodation the best base for all destinations.
