Ödeborg brings together traces of its industrial past, church architecture, prehistoric sites, and routes for walks and bike rides. If you want to plan your trip around your interests, you’ll find a range of options here: the history of Ödeborgs bruk, the development of the church, and routes leading from the church grounds into the forest and countryside.

Ödeborgs bruk and its history

Ödeborgs bruk was founded in 1898 by a Norwegian company led by the Swedish manager Victor Andersson. It produced nails and bricks. Initially, there was a separate brickworks and nail factory; in 1911, the two companies were merged under the name Ödeborgs bruks aktiebolag. This sequence illustrates the transition from two separate works to a single company.

Large parts of old Ödeborgs bruk have been preserved, including buildings, a former manager’s villa, and workers’ housing. The villa, once associated with the bruk, was built in 1902 on the west side of the Valboån. In 1975, the area of Ödeborgs bruk was designated an environment of cultural and historical value. Together, the preserved structures and recorded dates offer insight into the town’s industrial development without reducing the different buildings to a single function.

Church, museum, and earlier periods

Ödeborgs kyrka can also be understood through its different phases of construction. Its oldest parts date from the 13th century. In 1699, the church was extended and received its present three-sided chancel end; the tower was completed in 1769. The chancel end refers to the shape of the church’s east end at the chancel. This sequence—medieval building elements, an extension, and a tower completed later—offers a tangible way to explore the building’s history.

Ödeborgs fornsal houses more than 6,000 objects from Dalsland dating from before the industrial era. The museum building was completed in 1913. Brötegården offers a different historical focus: this open-air museum on a farm features objects from the farm and the surrounding area. From 1700 to 1876, Brötegården was the official residence of the Häradshövding (district judge) of Valbo Härad. There are also Bronze Age rock carvings at Brötegården. A cemetery dating from the Iron Age is located on Museikullen. These sites represent different periods and kinds of history—from prehistoric traces to the later history of public office.

Routes between the church grounds and nature

Kyrkstigen is nine kilometres long and starts or ends at Ödeborgs kyrka. If you’re interested in a route with a direct connection to the church, you can take this distance into account when planning your day. Another option for walking or cycling is the route between Ödeborg and Färgelanda, which follows the former railway line of the Lelångebanan. The two route descriptions offer different points of reference: Kyrkstigen has a stated distance, while the route to Färgelanda is described by its former railway line and the option to travel on foot or by bike.

Ödeborgsfjället is a southern spur of Kroppefjäll and offers opportunities for walks in the forest and countryside. There are several hiking trails on the fjäll, as well as small lakes where you can swim. Broad, easy-to-walk paths run around Brötegårdssjön; the terrain is considered accessible and particularly suitable for pushchairs and young children. Ödeborg’s wetland also has a rich birdlife. If you plan to spend most of your time outdoors, you can combine these nature experiences with an interest in longer hiking trails or a walk by the lake.

Planning your trip

Ödeborg is connected to Färgelanda by public transport; the journey to Färgelanda, the main locality, takes five minutes. Check the current timetable when planning a specific journey. When choosing accommodation in Ödeborg, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on: industrial history and architecture, prehistoric sites, or routes and nature.
