The circular route runs along paved and gravelled paths for pedestrians and cyclists and can be used at any time of year. The “Walk across four bridges” route leads along and across the Tidan River. In doing so, it combines historic surroundings with nature experiences in the town centre.

Cycling along the Göta Canal

For a longer bike ride, the Göta Canal Trail is a much larger route project: it is 220 kilometres long in total, divided into seven stages, and includes 87 kilometres of towpath free from motor traffic. The Göta Canal Trail is also designated as one of Sweden’s national cycling routes, specifically Route 7. The Göta Canal Trail provides another important route connection, linking Söderköping/Mem on the Baltic Sea with Sjötorp/Mariestad on Lake Vänern. This means Mariestad can also be considered in the context of a long-distance route, without limiting your stay to a single walk around town.

Gamla Stan and Mariestad Cathedral

Gamla Stan is considered one of the ten best-preserved town centres in Sweden. Most of the buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the northern part, Näset, architectural elements from before the great town fire of 1693 have been preserved. In summer, guided town walks are offered in Gamla Stan a few times a week; these walks can be booked by groups throughout the year. This makes the old town particularly interesting if you would like to explore its historic architecture not only on your own, but also as part of a guided tour.

Another distinctive landmark is Mariestad Cathedral. It was built between 1593 and 1625. Its spire reached its present height of 82 metres during the restoration carried out from 1903 to 1905. The current spire therefore belongs to the building’s later restoration history rather than to the period when it was originally constructed. Together with Gamla Stan, the cathedral forms a distinct cultural focus within a stay in the town.
